Overview
Inkay is a Dark/Psychic-type Pokémon categorized as the Revolving Pokémon, first introduced in Generation VI's Kalos region (Pokémon X and Pokémon Y). Registered as National Pokédex #0686, this aquatic-inspired creature lacks the Water type, relying instead on psychic power to levitate effortlessly through air, land, and water environments. It is widely recognized for its unique evolution mechanism, which requires players to physically rotate their gaming system upside down. Beyond the main video games, Inkay has featured prominently across various spin-off media and the animated series as a key partner of Team Rocket's James.
Appearance
Inkay resembles a small blue squid with a distinct aquatic anatomy. Its upper head mantle is pink with white spots, while a row of light-emitting organs is arranged evenly along its body. Its face features yellow eyes with black sclera and a small mouth shaped like a bird's beak. Multiple tentacles extend from its lower body, which it uses to grab objects or strike opponents. In its Shiny variant, the tentacles feature a distinct bright orange coloration.
Personality
Inkay possesses a relaxed, curious, and inquisitive nature. It exhibits a natural instinct to react to glowing lights and underwater sounds, which occasionally leads it into interactions with other sea creatures. It has a distinctive quirk of flipping itself upside down during battles and daily movements, a behavior that enhances its internal circulation and psychokinetic powers. As shown by James's partner in the animated series, Inkay can be highly food-motivated and playful, often spraying ink at opponents, yet it forms an intensely loyal and affectionate bond with its chosen Trainer.
Abilities
Inkay uses psychic power to float smoothly above ground or water. By flashing the light organs on its head in complex rhythms, it can hypnotize onlookers and rob them of their fighting spirit. In battle, it utilizes the unique Dark-type status move Topsy-Turvy to completely reverse all stat changes on its target. It can also perform physical strikes such as Peck, Pluck, Cut, and Night Slash using its beak and sharp tentacles, as well as spraying ink. Its Abilities include Contrary, Suction Cups, and the Hidden Ability Infiltrator. It evolves into Malamar when leveled up at level 30 or higher while holding the system upside down.
Background
Originating from the Kalos region, Inkay was first documented near coastal routes and ocean waters. Due to its unique ability to thrive out of water, it easily adapts to diverse ecosystems, including forests, rocky terrains, and freshwater lakes across regions such as Alola, Galar, and Paldea. In the Pokémon XY animated series, an Inkay became a central team member for Team Rocket's James throughout his journey. It has also appeared across numerous side titles, inhabiting underwater environments in New Pokémon Snap and participating in spin-offs like Pokémon GO and Pokémon Café ReMix.
Relationships
Inkay evolves into Malamar, which is further capable of Mega Evolution into Mega Malamar. In the animated series, it forms an unbreakable bond with Team Rocket's James, refusing to part ways even when offered a peaceful life with wild Inkay. In the Pokémon Adventures manga, an Inkay belongs to Team Flare scientist Xerosic, evolving after being turned upside down by Lysandre. Additionally, Inkay shares a natural rivalry with Chinchou, often being lured by Chinchou's lights only to counter with its own hypnotic techniques.
Trivia
Inkay was designed by artist Hitoshi Ariga. Its Japanese name, Maaiika, blends ma-ika (Japanese flying squid) with the casual phrase maa, iika ("oh well, whatever"), taking a working temporary name directly into official canon. The English name combines "ink," "inkfish," and "okay." As a tribute to famous squid-producing regions in Japan, official Pokémon manhole covers (Pokéfuta) featuring Inkay have been installed in Mori, Hokkaido (renowned for ikameshi), and Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture (famous for firefly squids).
