Overview
Noibat is the Sound Wave Pokémon introduced in Generation VI of the main Pokémon series, debuting in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Designated as number 0714 in the National Pokédex, it possesses a dual Flying and Dragon typing. Resembling a small bat that represents the juvenile stage of a flying dragon, it matures into Noivern upon reaching a high level.
Appearance
Standing 0.5 meters tall and weighing 8.0 kilograms, Noibat exhibits physical traits modeled after a bat and a young flying dragon. Its most prominent physical feature is a pair of exceptionally large ears atop its head. In its shiny variant, its normal body coloration changes entirely to blue.
Personality
Noibat exhibits nocturnal habits, sleeping inside dark cave habitats during the day and taking flight at night to forage. It displays a highly selective appetite, utilizing sound waves to locate and eat only perfectly ripened fruit. This inclination sometimes leads it to mistakenly bite into an Applin, startling itself. Individual depictions show a tender, youthful demeanor that requires patient practice to master flying.
Abilities
Noibat can emit ultrasonic waves up to 200,000 Hertz from its large ears. These sound waves serve to communicate with allies, immobilize prey, check fruit ripeness, and inflict intense dizziness capable of flooring heavy wrestlers and massive Pokémon. In battle, it can possess the abilities Frisk, Infiltrator, or the hidden ability Telepathy. Although it can learn moves like Dragon Claw and Air Slash, its overall base attributes remain relatively weak until evolution.
Background
First encountered in Kalos locations such as Terminus Cave and Victory Road, Noibat has since been observed across Alola, Galar, and Paldea. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, it appears early in Verdant Cavern and serves on the team of the rival Hau. In the animated series, Ash Ketchum hatches a Noibat from an egg found by Hawlucha, raising it through initial struggles until it evolves into Noivern.
Relationships
In the anime, Ash Ketchum serves as Noibat's trainer after hatching it from an egg. Within Ash's party, Hawlucha functions as an elder brother and flying mentor, while Fletchinder helped incubate its egg. In games like Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, it is owned by the rival Hau. Additionally, Noibat interacts humorously with Applin by accidentally mistaking the apple-like creature for food.
Trivia
Noibat's English name derives from noise and bat, mirroring its Japanese name Onbat, which combines on (sound) with bat. It belongs to the only evolution line where Flying is listed as the primary type before Dragon. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, defeating it drops Noibat Fur for craftable Technical Machines. Its appearance near library books inside Paldea's Academy likely references Portugal's Joanina Library, where bats are kept to control pests.
