Overview
Magearna is a Mythical Steel/Fairy-type creature featured in the Pokémon franchise. Classified as the Artificial Pokémon, it is a mechanical automaton constructed by a brilliant scientist approximately five hundred years ago. Powered by a synthetic heart embedded within its torso, Magearna is defined by its deep empathy toward humans and other Pokémon.
Appearance
Magearna resembles a metallic humanoid automaton. Its lower body features a rounded shell combining the appearance of a ball gown and a Poké Ball, while its upper torso has segmented, doll-like joints. The head is bordered by a non-rotating gear resembling a headdress, surmounted by semicircular extensions. A spherical core named the Soul-Heart is set into its chest, and the tips of its arms can blossom open like flower petals. Its body displays a silver palette in modern times, though its original design five centuries ago was painted in vivid red and gold. It can fully retract its body into its lower casing to form a compact ball, and it is capable of undergoing Mega Evolution into Mega Magearna.
Personality
Magearna possesses an exceptionally gentle and caring nature. By naturally synchronizing its senses with others, it can perceive the emotions, thoughts, and physical distress of nearby creatures, acting selflessly to aid any injured Pokémon it encounters. Although highly intelligent and capable of comprehending human speech, it cannot speak. When experiencing deep sadness or while sleeping, it habitually folds its limbs and upper body into its spherical lower shell.
Abilities
Its operational core is the Soul-Heart located in its chest, without which its physical body becomes entirely inert. In combat, Magearna can unfold its arm tips to unleash concentrated energy rays, including its signature technique Fleur Cannon, whereas outside of battle it can manifest flowers that emit comforting scents. It utilizes a full-body transformation that retracts its frame into a sphere for protection or sleep. Its repertoire includes diverse offensive beam attacks, stat-altering utility techniques such as Shift Gear and Trick Room, explosive moves, and the ability to enhance its battle efficiency through Mega Evolution.
Background
Magearna was constructed five centuries ago by the inventor Eliphas in the Azoth Kingdom to act as a companion and protector for the nation's princess. In the feature film Pokémon the Movie: Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, it lived peacefully on the Nebel Plateau alongside Volcanion before being targeted by villains seeking its power. In the Sun & Moon animated series, a deactivated unit purchased at an antique shop by Lillie's father, Mohn, was reactivated through the strong feelings of Lillie and her family. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, a dormant unit discovered in Lumiose City is brought back to operation using synthesized Mega Energy.
Relationships
In its primary feature film appearance, Magearna shares a deeply trusting bond with Volcanion, who acts as its protector. The historical inventor Eliphas serves as its creator. In the television animation, it forms a meaningful connection with Lillie, regaining its functionality through her warmth and subsequently illuminating the path toward her missing father, Mohn. In Pokémon Masters EX, it is paired with Gladion.
Trivia
The name Magearna is formed by combining the Latin word for machine (machina), the English word gear, and the traditional Polynesian concept of spiritual power (mana). Its name phonetics are unified across almost all language localizations worldwide. It holds the distinction of being the first species to explicitly carry the precise category designation of Artificial Pokémon. In Pokémon HOME, players who complete the National Pokédex are granted its historic Original Color variant.
