Overview

Tentacruel is a dual Water/Poison-type Jellyfish Pokémon with National Pokédex number 073, debuting in the Pokémon series as the evolved form of Tentacool. Widely inhabiting ocean environments across various regions, it is recognized as a swift marine creature that pairs high Special Defense with notable speed in battle.

Appearance

Tentacruel features a light blue main body—rendered in a darker blue in the animated series—accented by three red crystalline spheres of varying sizes on its head. Hook-shaped appendages project from the front and back of its head. Beneath its body are flexible tentacles, stated in Pokédex entries to total eighty, though it contracts and stores most inside its body depending on moisture levels, with older individuals having fewer. Its shiny variation presents green head spheres and brighter tentacles.

Personality

Tentacruel exhibits an aggressive and ruthless demeanor when hunting or engaging in battle. Upon spotting prey, it expands its tentacles to form a wide net, trapping targets and repeatedly stinging them until they weaken. While swarms of Tentacruel aggressively consume local fish Pokémon populations, they also exhibit cooperative habits, flashing their red crystalline spheres to communicate and alert nearby allies when facing danger.

Abilities

Tentacruel can freely extend its tentacles using internal moisture, ensnaring multiple targets simultaneously to sting them with poison. Its red spheres fire energy beams and emit powerful supersonic waves capable of roughing the ocean surface during hunts. Its Clear Body ability prevents stat reduction from opponents, while Liquid Ooze damages foes attempting to drain its health, and Rain Dish restores HP during rainfall. In battle, it leverages its high Special Defense and Speed alongside moves like Hydro Pump, Toxic, Acid Spray, and Mirror Coat.

Background

Found across oceans in regions such as Kanto, Tentacruel evolves from Tentacool upon reaching level 30. It is a common encounter for trainers navigating sea routes or fishing, often acting as a fast and resilient wall in late-game marine paths. In the animated series, an exceptionally mutated, giant Tentacruel—enraged after human coastal development destroyed its habitat—led a massive horde of Tentacool to attack a nearby city before being persuaded to return to sea.

Relationships

Tentacruel is the direct evolution of Tentacool. Although it resembles Toedscruel from the Paldea region, the two are completely distinct species, with the latter being a wood-dwelling fungus Pokémon. Prominent trainers who field Tentacruel include Gym Leaders Koga and Janine from Kanto, as well as Champion Wallace from Hoenn. In the first animated feature film, it is also shown under the command of the trainer Umio.

Trivia

Its English name is a blend of 'tentacle' and 'cruel,' while its Japanese name Dokukurage combines 'doku' (poison) and 'kurage' (jellyfish). Despite Pokédex lore asserting it has eighty tentacles, in-game graphics and official media illustrations rarely depict all eighty at once. Its behavioral tendency to clear surrounding ocean zones of fish Pokémon when swarming directly mirrors the real-world marine phenomenon known as a jellyfish bloom or 'jellyfish spiral.'
