Overview
Snorlax is a Normal-type creature, categorized as the Sleeping Pokémon, originally introduced in Pokémon Red and Green. Identified as number 0143 in the National Pokédex, it represents the evolved form of Munchlax through high friendship. Recognized by its massive stature, insatiable hunger, and constant lethargy, it frequently serves as an iconic roadblock in the video game series that players must wake using a Poké Flute. Beyond its role as an environmental obstacle, it is also widely recognized as a resilient powerhouse in battle.
Appearance
Snorlax is a massive, rotund creature with a dark navy or blackish back and a cream-colored face and belly. Its entire body is covered in soft fur. It features pointed, ear-like projections on its head, small fangs protruding from its lower jaw, and sharp claws on its hands and feet. Its eyes are almost always squinted closed, and it possesses an exceptionally huge stomach. In its Gigantamax form, dense greenery and a giant berry-bearing tree sprout directly across its enormous belly.
Personality
Extremely relaxed and easygoing, Snorlax spends the vast majority of its time either eating or sleeping. It exhibits a gentle and indifferent demeanor, showing complete tolerance even when small creatures or children use its broad stomach as a playground. While fundamentally passive and sluggish, it possesses a surprising dual nature; when motivated by food or forced to exert genuine effort, its normally idle disposition gives way to remarkable drive and physical activity.
Abilities
Snorlax possesses the abilities Immunity, Thick Fat, and Gluttony. Its stomach acid is potent enough to digest moldy food and deadly toxins without discomfort. Despite its bulk, it can jump to great heights and swim long distances. In battle, it features exceptional HP and Special Defense, leveraging moves like Rest, Body Slam, Curse, Earthquake, and Self-Destruct. When equipped with a Snorlium Z and knowing Giga Impact, it can execute its devastating signature Z-Move, Pulverizing Pancake.
Background
Snorlax meandered into fame in Pokémon Red and Green by falling asleep in the middle of key routes in the Kanto region, blocking travel until awakened by a Poké Flute. This roadblock archetype recurred across multiple generations, including Gold and Silver as well as X and Y. Historically in the Hisui region, its voracious appetite caused it to be feared as a natural disaster capable of emptying granaries. However, when trained properly, it serves as a powerful staple on elite trainers' battle teams.
Relationships
Snorlax maintains strong connections with several prominent trainers throughout the franchise. Most famously, it serves as one of the key members of Pokémon Trainer Red's team atop Mt. Silver. It is also trained by main rivals such as Barry in the Sinnoh region and Hop in the Galar region, as well as notable figures like Professor Kukui and Commander Kamado. Furthermore, it develops from its pre-evolved form, Munchlax, when raised with high friendship.
Trivia
The English name Snorlax is a compound of snore and lax, reflecting its sleeping habit and lazy demeanor. Its Japanese name Kabigon derives from the word for mold (kabi), inspired by its ability to eat moldy food without ill effect, combined with a monster-like suffix. During the early generations of the franchise, Snorlax held the title of the absolute heaviest Pokémon, though later additions like Cosmog, Celesteela, and Groudon eventually surpassed its weight record.
