Overview

Braixen is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in the Kalos region of Pokémon X and Y. Classified as the Fox Pokémon, it serves as the middle evolutionary stage between the Fire-type starter Fennekin and its final form, Delphox. In combat, it draws a wooden twig tucked inside its bushy tail to use as a flaming magic wand, focusing its fire and psychic capabilities. Across main video games, animated adaptations, and spin-off titles, it stands out as an iconic partner character.

Appearance

Braixen is a bipedal fox-like Pokémon featuring a sharp gaze and red fluff protruding from inside its ears. Its face, neck, and front limbs are covered in white fur, while the rest of its body predominantly exhibits yellow fur. Fur around its hips flares outwards into a miniskirt shape, and black fur coats its rear legs like stockings. Its voluminous tail has an orange tip and holds a small wooden branch inserted at its base.

Personality

Braixen feels a sense of calm whenever a wooden stick is tucked into the base of its tail. In interactive game modes, it displays highly endearing and cute gestures. Its temperament varies depending on its environment and trainer. For instance, in the animated series, it demonstrates a proud, stylish, and highly expressive demeanour focused on performance. Conversely, in the Pokémon SPECIAL manga, an individual conditioned by Team Flare grew into a cold, ruthless warrior with a sinister gaze.

Abilities

Using its dexterous front limbs, Braixen draws the stick from its tail and ignites it through friction. The burning branch serves as a wand-like catalyst to channel concentration for executing Fire-type attacks such as Flamethrower and Fire Blast, as well as psychic capabilities like Psyshock. It can also twirl the flaming stick to signal danger to distant companions. Possessing abilities like Blaze and Magician, it can fly atop its stick, enhance its moves via Sunny Day, and unleash magical projectiles during combat.

Background

Braixen originated in the Gen VI titles Pokémon X and Y as a key partner Pokémon of the Kalos region. It evolves from Fennekin at level 16 and reaches its final form, Delphox, at level 36. Depending on the starter chosen in the main games, it is fielded by the protagonist or rivals Calem, Serena, and Shauna. It reappears in subsequent titles including the DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and Pokémon LEGENDS: Z-A. In the Pokémon XY anime series, Serena's Braixen became a central figure in Pokémon Showcases, while in the Pokémon SPECIAL manga, one played a prominent role within Team Flare's ranks.

Relationships

Braixen forms a three-stage evolutionary line alongside its pre-evolution Fennekin and final form Delphox, standing as the Fire-type counterpart to Quilladin and Frogadier. In the animated series, it shares a deep emotional bond with its trainer Serena as they compete in showcases together. The Kalos Queen Elle also previously trained a Braixen. In the main-series video games, trainers such as Calem and Shauna can command Braixen depending on the initial starter selection.

Trivia

The Japanese name Tairenar is derived from the English word "tail" combined with "renard," the French word for fox. Similarly, its English name Braixen blends "branch" with "vixen" (a female fox). In real-world promotional efforts, Braixen appears on an official Pokémon manhole cover ("Pokéfuta") located in Okura Village, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, where it is depicted alongside Lampent and Galarian Darmanitan.
