Appearance
In her standard outfit from Pokémon X and Y, Serena features long, wavy blonde hair tied loosely at the tips and blue-grey eyes. Her attire consists of a red canotier hat decorated with white sunglasses, a collared sleeveless top, a red high-waisted pleated skirt, black thigh-high socks, high-top sneakers, a pink bag, and a Mega Ring. In the games, players can alter her look with short hair, twintails, black hair, midriff-exposing micro hoodies, mini camisoles, and various stylish outfits. In the animated series, she later cuts her hair into a short bob, wearing a pink tunic dress accented by a blue ribbon gifted by Ash Ketchum beneath a long red cardigan. In Pokémon Masters EX, she wears unique attire such as a ponytail for Valentine's Day, a Sygna Suit inspired by Zygarde, and a Neo Champion outfit.
Personality
Serena is exceptionally polite and considerate, rarely expressing harsh opposition or dislike toward others unless dealing with close family or friends. When surrounded by those she trusts, her disposition becomes far more open and expressive. She has a notable weakness for supernatural phenomena; when frightened, she habitually tells terrifying stories, scaring those around her before regretting it and covering her own mouth. Although initially fastidious about cleanliness and preferring Pokémon Centers over camping, she gradually comes to enjoy outdoor travel. She has a keen passion for fashion with high standards for cuteness. Exceptionally nurturing, she takes genuine joy in looking after her traveling companions.
Abilities
Having been raised by a former Rhyhorn racer, Serena possesses exceptional Rhyhorn riding skills, strong athletic ability, and excellent balance, enabling her to maneuver easily in sky battles using wingsuits. As a Pokémon Performer, her outstanding dancing talent allows her to excel in Pokémon Showcases. She can also command Pikachu effectively in battle by mimicking Ash Ketchum's tactics. Her versatile supportive capabilities include serving as a travel guide using mapbooks, crafting specialized Poképuffs and baked sweets, sewing clothing, applying makeup, styling Pokémon, and treating injured Pokémon. In Pokémon Masters EX, she demonstrates high tactical disruption, utilizing Hypnosis to put entire enemy teams to sleep, inflicting mass paralysis with Stun Spore, and systematically lowering opponent stats with partners like Greninja and Fletchling.
Background
Originally residing in Vaniville Town in the Kalos region with her mother Grace, a former Rhyhorn racer, Serena's journey was set in motion by her childhood encounter with Ash Ketchum at Professor Oak's summer camp. Recognizing him on television years later, she set out from home to reunite with him. After joining Ash's group in Kalos, she acted as their navigator while discovering her own dream of becoming a Pokémon Performer. Aiming for the title of Kalos Queen, she competed in Pokémon Showcases, overcoming early setbacks to refine her craft. Upon concluding her journey through Kalos, she traveled to the Hoenn region to challenge Pokémon Contests as a Coordinator. In the Pokémon Adventures manga, her counterpart is Yvonne Gabena (Y), a trainee Sky Trainer.
Relationships
Serena harbors deep romantic feelings and admiration for Ash Ketchum, whom she met in early childhood. She frequently draws strength from his determined attitude and offers him encouraging words during his moments of self-doubt. She shares a sisterly bond with Bonnie, constantly comforting and protecting her during dangerous situations. Her relationship with Clemont is friendly and cooperative, as she often bakes desserts to complement his cooking, though she remains wary of his self-destructing inventions. While she initially resisted her mother Grace's strict Rhyhorn racing regime, she comes to respect her mother's guidance. In the video games and Pokémon Masters EX, she maintains a close dynamic with Calem as both a friend and rival.
Trivia
The name Serena is believed to derive from the Spanish word for "serene" or "calm." When presenting an item or showcasing an achievement, she frequently uses the catchphrase "Ta-da!" (ジャジャン), though she appears entirely unaware of this habit herself. In addition to her major roles in the Pokémon anime series and feature films such as Hoopa and the Clash of Ages and Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction, Serena makes visual appearances in promotional media including the special music video GOTCHA! and the animated series Pokémon Evolutions.
