Overview

Akuma, known in Japan as Gouki, is a prominent fighter and recurring boss character throughout the Street Fighter franchise and numerous crossover titles. Proclaiming himself the "Master of the Fist," he is a solitary martial artist who embraces the dangerous power known as the Satsui no Hado. Driven by an unyielding desire to achieve absolute strength, he wanders the world in pursuit of formidable opponents capable of engaging in true life-or-death combat. Defined by his imposing presence and devastating techniques, he stands as one of fighting game history's most legendary figures.

Appearance

Akuma is a heavily muscled warrior with dark, bronze skin, red eyes, and dark red or white hair gathered into a topknot. He wears a dark, sleeveless karate gi bound by a thick piece of rope instead of a standard belt, complemented by straw sandals on his feet. Around his neck hangs a strand of oversized wooden prayer beads, while his hands are wrapped in rope or fitted with leather fingerless gloves. His visage resembles traditional Buddhist temple statues, and his back frequently displays glowing kanji characters such as "Ten" (Heaven).

Personality

Akuma possesses a stern and solitary disposition entirely devoted to martial perfection. Though he commands a menacing aura of dark energy, he adheres to a strict warrior code, refusing to harm innocent bystanders or those unprepared for combat. Away from battle, he exhibits surprisingly grounded habits, such as living self-sufficiently in nature, enjoying fishing, and showing quiet benevolence toward children. He speaks in an archaic tone and values honor, steadfastly fulfilling past debts and promises even decades after they were made.

Abilities

Akuma fights using a lethal blend of Ansatsuken techniques enhanced by the Satsui no Hado. His arsenal features versatile moves such as the "Zanku Hadoken," which fires energy projectiles downward from mid-air, the "Ashura Senku" teleport that renders him invulnerable during movement, and the "Kongo Chakuka." His most iconic technique is the "Shun Goku Satsu" (Raging Demon), an instant-kill sequence that strikes the opponent in total darkness. While possessing immense offensive power and high mobility, his standard playable iterations are balanced by lower vitality and stun resistance.

Background

Originally training in Ansatsuken alongside his older brother Gouken under their master Goutetsu, Akuma surrendered to the forbidden power of the Satsui no Hado to transcend human limits. After mastering this deadly aura, he challenged and killed Goutetsu using the Shun Goku Satsu, fully embracing the path of the Shura. He later confronted and defeated Gouken, leaving behind his former lineage. Continually searching for worthy combatants, he roams the earth—and occasionally parallel realms—seeking matches that test the absolute peak of his martial capability.

Relationships

Akuma shares a deep rivalry with his elder brother Gouken, whom he fought in mortal combat. He takes a keen interest in Ryu, recognizing his latent connection to the Satsui no Hado and waiting for him to unleash his full potential as a true equal. He also maintains mutual respect with the assassin Gen, viewing him as one of the few fighters capable of a genuine fight to the death. Additionally, he honors a past debt to Kazumi Mishima by pursuing the destruction of her husband Heihachi Mishima and son Kazuya Mishima.

Trivia

Akuma's visual design was originally modeled after traditional Japanese Buddhist statues, guardian Nioh figures, and lion-dog motifs. In international releases, his name was changed from Gouki to "Akuma" (meaning "demon" in Japanese) to provide a more striking impression for global audiences. A famous 1998 April Fools' prank in a gaming magazine spawned a widespread rumor that he was an unlockable character in Resident Evil 2. Furthermore, he appeared as a giant mecha designated "Zero Gouki" in the fighting game Cyberbots.
