Overview
Cody Travers is a fictional character from Capcom's Street Fighter and Final Fight video game series. Originally celebrated as the street-brawling hero who saved Metro City from the Mad Gear gang, he found himself incapable of settling into a peaceful life. After engaging in endless street fights and spending years as an escaped convict, he eventually returned to society in Street Fighter V, succeeding Mike Haggar as the new Mayor of Metro City.
Appearance
Cody Travers is a muscular man featuring short blonde hair and blue eyes. During his convict era, he sported messy hair with stubble, wearing a striped prison uniform, unlocked handcuffs around his wrists, and hand wraps. Upon taking office as Mayor of Metro City, his look transitioned to a neatly slicked-back haircut paired with a stylish suit jacket and necktie.
Personality
Unable to adapt to ordinary life, Cody Travers is driven by an obsessive need for battle. As a prisoner, he exhibited a cynical, lethargic demeanor, voluntarily fighting in unlocked handcuffs as a self-imposed handicap. He disdains receiving lectures, particularly from Mike Haggar, while enjoying spinach, milk, and his home city. Despite complaining about administrative work as mayor, he retains a strong sense of obligation and steps up to protect his allies and city.
Abilities
Cody fights using a brawling martial arts style backed by raw physical strength capable of shattering 50cm-thick concrete walls. He is a master of improvised weaponry, seamlessly picking up knives and metal pipes from the battlefield to use in combat. His famous jab combo from Final Fight, known as Punch-hame, was adapted into special moves like Final Destruction and Final Combination. In Street Fighter V, his V-Trigger techniques showcase his lethal skill with blades and pipes.
Background
In Final Fight, Cody joined Mike Haggar and Guy to dismantle the Mad Gear crime syndicate and rescue his kidnapped girlfriend, Jessica. Unable to relinquish his violent lifestyle, he was eventually abandoned by Jessica and framed or arrested for assault by corrupt officer Edi. E. Imprisoned in a cell, he repeatedly punched through concrete walls to escape for street fights, returning voluntarily when bored. Eventually, Haggar pulled strings to secure his full pardon, leading to Cody's appointment as Metro City's new mayor.
Relationships
Mike Haggar is his long-time comrade who frequently visited and reprimanded him in prison before arranging his pardon and passing him the mayoral seat. He shares a deep mutual respect with his close friend Guy. His former girlfriend Jessica left him due to his inability to stop fighting. Corrupt cop Edi. E continues to pursue him whenever he escapes custody. He also shares rivalries with former Mad Gear members Rolento and Abigail, and met Guy's master, Zeku.
Trivia
His full name, Cody Travers, was first established in the overseas game Final Fight: Streetwise—which starred his brother Kyle—and was later canonized in Street Fighter V. His design and name stem from Tom Cody, the protagonist of the film Streets of Fire, portrayed by Michael Paré. Due to his immense popularity as a dark-hero convict among international fans, Capcom maintained his prisoner outfit for Super Street Fighter IV. He is also referenced in Street Fighter 6 within the World Tour mode description for Metro City.
