Overview
Gouken is a character in the Street Fighter fighting game series, serving as the revered martial arts master of Ryu and Ken Masters, as well as the older brother of Akuma (Gouki). He refined an inherited assassination technique into a balanced fighting style and passed it down to his disciples. Long believed to have been killed in a duel against his brother, he actually survived by entering a prolonged state of suspended animation. Known by the epithet "as a solid rock," he made his playable debut in Street Fighter IV.
Appearance
Gouken is an elderly man with a heavily muscled build, a balding head featuring long white hair, a full beard, and a cross-shaped scar above his left eyebrow. He wears a large prayer bead necklace and a grey karate gi worn with the right sleeve slipped off to expose his upper body. The back of his gi bears the kanji for "Nothingness" (無). Instead of a standard belt, his waist and the hems of his trousers are bound with thick rope.
Personality
Gouken is a strict yet deeply compassionate sensei. While he insists on rigorous discipline, he exhibits mercy, as shown when he expelled Dan Hibiki for harboring vengeance without destroying his capability to practice martial arts. He is somewhat unfamiliar with modern Western culture and food. He enjoys eating dango, dislikes mosquitoes, and considers fishing to be his personal specialty.
Abilities
Gouken practices a refined combat style derived from Ansatsuken and wields the Power of Nothingness (Mu no Hado), which counteracts the Satsui no Hado. His signature techniques include the single-handed Gou Hadouken—which can be aimed straight or diagonally—the vertically rising Tatsumaki Gou Rasen, and a counter-strike called Kongoushin. Although he deems the Shoryuken a forbidden technique, he utilizes devastating forms of it, such as the legendary Shin Shoryuken, along with the Denjin Hadouken.
Background
Gouken trained under the master Goutetsu alongside his brother Akuma. Rejecting the lethal nature of the assassin's art, he redeveloped the techniques into a true martial art aimed at self-improvement and defense, subsequently raising Ryu and Ken as his pupils. Although rumored to have perished in a fatal fight against Akuma, he had actually fallen into a deep coma, eventually awakening years later to return to the fighting world.
Relationships
He is the elder brother of Akuma, with whom he trained under their shared master, Goutetsu. He served as the primary mentor and father figure to Ryu and Ken Masters, guiding their path toward becoming true martial artists. He briefly instructed Dan Hibiki before expelling him due to his desire for revenge. Through his pupils, figures like Sakura Kasugano and Sean can be considered his grand-disciples.
Trivia
Gouken's visual design originated in Masaomi Kanzaki's manga adaptation Street Fighter II -RYU- before being adopted into official game canon. His inclusion as a character traces back to a famous mistranslation of Ryu's victory quote in the Western release of Street Fighter II, which birthed the urban legend of "Sheng Long." This long-running April Fools' rumor eventually led to his realization in the main game series.
