Overview

Ryu is the main protagonist of Capcom's Street Fighter fighting game series and an iconic figure in the fighting game genre. Known as the "Indomitable Seeker," he wanders the world in pursuit of becoming a "true martial artist." Since his debut in the original 1987 arcade title, he has remained the central face of the franchise and appeared across numerous crossover titles and media adaptations.

Appearance

Ryu has messy short dark hair—originally red in his first appearance—thick eyebrows, and a well-toned, muscular physique. His classic outfit consists of a sleeveless white martial arts gi, red fingerless gloves, bare feet, and a red headband, which was white in early titles. In Street Fighter 6, he sports facial hair, gi trousers with a bare upper body draped in a kasaya sash, sarashi midsection wrapping, and sandals. Another alternate attire features a head-towel, a sukajan jacket, and setta sandals.

Personality

Ryu is exceptionally stoic, earnest, and dedicated to the path of martial arts. He constantly seeks self-improvement and respects the strength of others, inspiring fighters worldwide. Indifferent to material wealth or modern technology, he initially struggles with devices like smartphones but adapts quickly. Although often mistaken for a homeless vagrant, he actually possesses legitimate savings from tournament prize money and maintains a fixed residence. He modestly considers himself too inexperienced to take formal disciples, yet willingly shares training with earnest fellow martial artists.

Abilities

Ryu practices a martial art rooted in Ansatsuken taught by his master Gouken, which he continuously refines. His primary techniques include the Hadouken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku, giving him a well-balanced style capable of both offense and defense. Over time, he learned to control and integrate the dark energy known as Satsui no Hado into his own power. Outside of combat, his noted skills include the ability to sleep anywhere and a knack for hitchhiking.

Background

Orphaned at a young age without memories of his parents, Ryu was taken in by Gouken and raised in a secluded mountain dojo to learn martial arts. He grew up training alongside Ken Masters as a surrogate brother. At age 23, he left the dojo to travel the world and test his skills in martial arts tournaments. Throughout his journeys, he has faced shadowy organizations and struggled against the malevolent influence of the Satsui no Hado while continuing his eternal quest for true mastery.

Relationships

Gouken is Ryu's master and surrogate father figure. Ken Masters is his lifelong best friend, training partner, and rival, who gifted Ryu his signature red headband. Muay Thai champion Sagat went from a bitter enemy to a respected rival and close friend. Ryu also contends with Akuma and Kage regarding the Satsui no Hado, while maintaining friendly ties with Sakura Kasugano, Chun-Li, Guile, and Dan Hibiki.

Trivia

Ryu made his debut as the first-player character "隆" in the original 1987 arcade release of Street Fighter. A mistranslation of his Shoryuken win quote in the North American release of Street Fighter II gave birth to the famous "Sheng Long" urban legend. His favorite food is mizu-yokan, and he dislikes spiders. His casual Outfit 3 in Street Fighter 6 gained widespread popularity and official crossover recognition due to its resemblance to a ramen shop owner.
