Overview

Sagat is a major character in the Street Fighter fighting game series. Originating from Thailand, he is a legendary Muay Thai master known by titles such as the "Emperor of Muay Thai" and the "Invincible Tiger." First appearing as the final boss in the original Street Fighter, he later became a recurring playable fighter. Possessing an imposing physical frame and unmatched martial expertise, Sagat is a stoic warrior who constantly seeks powerful opponents to refine his technique and spirit.

Appearance

Sagat is a massive man standing 226 cm tall. He is bald and wears an eyepatch over his right eye, which was blinded in past combat. A prominent scar spans across his chest, left by Ryu's Shoryuken. His body is heavily muscular, with bandages wrapped around his hands and feet. Traditionally clad in simple Muay Thai shorts, his default outfit shifted to tattered training clothes in later appearances. His official weight varies between titles, ranging from 78 kg up to 139 kg.

Personality

Sagat is a proud and honorable fighter who values battling strong opponents above all else. He thoroughly despises cowardly tactics, holding deep respect for martial integrity. Although his initial defeat to Ryu blinded him with vengeance—leading him to temporarily join an evil organization—he eventually realized the hollow nature of revenge and reclaimed his personal pride. Beneath his stern and intimidating exterior, he shows warmth toward the villagers and children in his Thai home, often offering quiet counsel to lost souls.

Abilities

Sagat fights using Muay Thai, wielding overwhelming range and destructive power in his kicks and strikes. He can hold his breath underwater for over 20 minutes and possesses enough brute strength to break logs into firewood with his bare hands. His signature abilities include launching high and low projectiles via Tiger Shot and Ground Tiger Shot, delivering a rapid flying knee with Tiger Crash, and executing a powerful rising anti-air punch with Tiger Uppercut.

Background

In his youth, Sagat defeated the reigning champion Nuah Kahn to claim the title of Muay Thai Emperor. Despite losing his right eye in a duel against Go Hibiki, he remained undefeated until the first World Warrior tournament, where Ryu's Shoryuken handed him his first defeat and left a deep scar on his chest. Driven by revenge, he joined M. Bison's syndicate Shadaloo as one of the Four Heavenly Kings, but later departed upon recognizing the emptiness of hatred. He eventually settled in a remote Thai village, living peacefully while continuing his training.

Relationships

Sagat considers Ryu his ultimate rival and trusted friend, having left his past hatred behind. He formerly served M. Bison as part of Shadaloo's Four Heavenly Kings, but harbored no loyalty toward the villain and ultimately severed ties. His former disciple Adon turned against him out of disdain for his defeat. Dan Hibiki, son of the slain Go Hibiki, once sought revenge against him, though Sagat views Dan with quiet sympathy. Additionally, he shares a bond with a resident tiger named Uirameeu and once teamed up with Dhalsim to save missing children.

Trivia

Sagat's iconic home stage features a giant reclining Buddha statue in Thailand. His body mass index was famously disproportionate in earlier games, giving him an unusually light official weight for his 226 cm height—a detail directly referenced in Street Fighter 6 dialogue. In early lore, he was initially identified as the one who defeated Gouken, though this plot point was later reshaped in subsequent entries.
