Overview
M. Bison, known as Vega in Japan, is a major antagonist in the Street Fighter fighting game series by Capcom. As the supreme commander of the evil syndicate Shadaloo, he seeks world domination through military force and criminal enterprise. He is a master of Psycho Power, a dark energy rooted in evil and chaos. Bison uses cloned spare bodies to survive physical destruction and repeatedly return to plague the world. His ruthlessness makes him the primary enemy of many fighters, including Ryu, Chun-Li, and Guile.
Appearance
M. Bison traditionally wears a red military uniform featuring shoulder guards, shin guards, gloves, and a peaked cap emblazoned with a skull emblem. He has muscular physique and pupil-less white eyes. In the Street Fighter Zero series, his body is noticeably larger and more heavily muscled, whereas his build is leaner in Street Fighter II and IV. In Street Fighter V, due to body degradation, he exhibits white hair and wears a long-skirted coat. Other iterations depict him with long hair, gray hair, hoods, or fingerless gloves.
Personality
M. Bison is inherently cruel, tyrannical, and obsessed with world conquest, holding disdain for weaklings and incompetent subordinates. He spreads chaos to absorb negative emotions and fuel his power. However, after losing his memories in Street Fighter 6, his mindset shifts drastically. He no longer seeks world domination, instead desiring solely to challenge strong opponents. In this state, he exhibits a surprisingly pragmatic and calm demeanor, showing respect to capable individuals and even helping an injured horse.
Abilities
M. Bison is the original wielder of Psycho Power, a dark energy weaponized for combat. He utilizes this energy to amplify his physical strikes and manipulate opponents, and he also possesses skill in hypnosis. Through the Psycho Drive device, he can magnify his energy and maintain his physical vessels. Bison can transfer his consciousness into artificial spare bodies to bypass death and can directly bestow Psycho Power into compatible individuals.
Background
Originally trained under a master of Soul Power, Bison discovered Psycho Power hidden deep within it. After killing his master and fellow disciples who opposed him, he formed the criminal syndicate Shadaloo. Through weapons trafficking, drug trade, and human experimentation, he expanded his empire while creating spare bodies to house his immense energy. After suffering a defeat against Ryu in Street Fighter V, he was thought destroyed, but later reappeared in Street Fighter 6 as an amnesiac wanderer.
Relationships
Bison shares a deep spiritual destiny with Rose, a fellow disciple of his former master. His criminal inner circle and subordinates have included Sagat, Vega (Balrog in US), Balrog (M. Bison in US), F.A.N.G, and JP. He created cloned or modified bodies such as Seth, Abel, Cammy White, Ed, Euni, and Juli, often seeking to use them or Ryu as vessels. Juri Han harbors intense hatred toward him for ruining her family. He also shares a bitter combat history with Akuma, who famously ambushed and defeated him.
Trivia
Due to localized name changes between regions, the character known as Vega in Japan is named M. Bison in Western releases. Additionally, the giant Reclining Buddha statue seen in the Thailand stage from Street Fighter II is canonically part of Shadaloo's headquarters, housing a concealed cannon inside its mouth.
