Overview

Gen is a legendary martial artist and former assassin from the Street Fighter series, first debuting in the original Street Fighter. Known in the underworld as the Silent Assassin, he maintains a front as a Chinese restaurant proprietor while holding deadly mastery over Chinese martial arts. Despite being over seventy years old and afflicted with a terminal illness, he rejects dying peacefully in bed, wandering the globe in search of a worthy opponent to grant him a true death match.

Appearance

Gen is a slender elderly man over seventy years old. He has long white hair along with a prominent white beard and mustache. His attire consists of traditional long-sleeved Chinese clothing, and he accents his look with jewelry including earrings.

Personality

Gen is a quiet, solitary individual who dislikes crowds, preferring peaceful endeavors like reciting Chinese poetry, preparing herbal medicines, and eating pork buns. Despite his lethal background, he holds deep martial pride, refusing to suffer a slow death from disease and demanding an honorable end in battle. Though a deadly killer, he possesses keen judgment of character, capable of recognizing a pure spirit in opponents and granting them mercy when he senses true potential.

Abilities

Gen fights by interchanging between two distinct martial arts stances: So-ryu and Ki-ryu. So-ryu focuses on close-quarters combat, utilizing rapid punching techniques like Hyakurenko and the lightning-fast vital-point strike Zan'ei. Ki-ryu emphasizes agile movements to confuse targets, featuring aerial options such as Ouga and the anti-air technique Jako-ha, which grips the opponent's head with both legs before slamming them down. His proficiency allows him to block Gouki's Shun Goku Satsu, demonstrating extraordinary martial prowess.

Background

Hailing from China, Gen lived as a restaurant proprietor while secretly operating as a feared underworld assassin. Upon learning he suffered from a fatal disease, he abandoned a quiet life to search for an opponent worthy of ending his story in battle. His pursuit of a terminal battle and his history with Chun-Li were explored further in the Street Fighter ZERO series. In the manga Sakura Ganbaru!, he encountered Kasugano Sakura while hunting down the escaped fighter Cammy.

Relationships

Gen shares a mutual respect with Gouki, with both martial artists regarding each other as ultimate rivals. He holds a complex connection to Chun-Li's father, leading him to watch over Chun-Li from afar. During his fight against Kasugano Sakura, he spared her life after sensing her noble nature. Because of the countless lives he has taken as an assassin, fighters such as Ryu and Elena perceive a heavy aura of departed souls surrounding him.

Trivia

Although introduced as a standard mid-game opponent in the original Street Fighter, Gen gained significant narrative weight from the ZERO series onward due to his rival connection with Gouki. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he appears as a Hope-rank Spirit possessing Lucario. Alongside Ryu, Ken, and Sagat, he is one of the very few characters from the original 1987 game to be featured as a Spirit in that title.
