Overview
Sodom is a fictional fighter featured in Capcom's Street Fighter Alpha series and the beat 'em up game Final Fight. Originally a high-ranking executive of the crime syndicate Mad Gear, he is an American fighter who possesses an extreme obsession with Japanese culture. Despite operating under hilarious cultural misunderstandings, he fights strictly according to his personal code of Bushido.
Appearance
Sodom conceals his face beneath a Japanese kabuto helmet and menho mask. His upper body features American football body armor emblazoned with an improperly written kanji combining 'death' and 'heart', paired with arm guards. For his lower half, he combines blue jeans with traditional tabi footwear and straw sandals or geta. He is a muscular Caucasian male who once wore a traditional sumo mawashi while maintaining his helmet.
Personality
After watching the television drama Shogun, Sodom developed a intense passion for Japanese culture, though his headstrong nature leads to constant misunderstandings. Despite his villainous background, he values an honorable Bushido spirit, fighting targets one-on-one without relying on subordinates and demonstrating a willingness for self-sacrifice. However, he is emotionally fragile when his flawed grasp of traditions is directly criticized, and completely loses his desire to fight if his face mask is broken. He communicates using a bizarre pseudo-dialect that forces English words into Japanese phonetic rhythms.
Abilities
Sodom relies on high physical endurance and massive striking power, attacking opponents head-on without deception. In Final Fight, he wields dual katana blades designated as Masamune and Muramasa. Following spiritual training at a Zen temple, he transitions to dual jitte while practicing his self-styled Japanese Martial Arts. Outside of direct combat, he possesses specialized skills in performing traditional water tricks and operating heavy vehicles such as trucks.
Background
Hailing from the United States, Sodom served as a top executive in the Mad Gear syndicate, organizing underground professional wrestling where he competed as an undefeated champion. Following Mad Gear's destruction, he recognized his flawed understanding of Japanese traditions and traveled to a Zen temple in Hida for spiritual training. Returning with jitte weapons to rebuild Mad Gear, he engaged in major conflicts—including driving a heavy truck into M. Bison's Psycho Drive to destroy it. He eventually abandoned crime and opened a yakitori food stall.
Relationships
Sodom harbors a severe complex toward the Bushinryu practitioner Guy, not for destroying Mad Gear, but because Guy bluntly pointed out Sodom's incorrect knowledge of Japan, creating a lasting trauma. He maintains a warm friendship with his former Mad Gear colleague Rolento, who regards Sodom as a trusted comrade. In an effort to recruit powerful fighters for his reformed syndicate, Sodom once crashed a sumo match to challenge E. Honda directly in the ring.
Trivia
In several international versions of his games, Sodom was renamed 'Katana' to avoid biblical associations with his name. The design of Yamato Man from the Mega Man series was created using Sodom as a visual motif. Additionally, in the spin-off title Mighty Final Fight, his older brothers appear as boss characters sharing his identical physical appearance.
