Overview
Makoto is a central playable character in Capcom's Street Fighter fighting game series, debuting in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and later appearing in Super Street Fighter IV. Hailing from the Tosa region of Japan, she is a hot-blooded young martial artist and the designated successor to the prestigious Rindoukan karate dojo. Following the tragic passing of her father, the family dojo fell into severe decline, prompting her to participate in high-stakes international fighting tournaments to earn repair funds and restore her family's martial legacy to national prominence.
Appearance
Makoto has a distinct tomboyish appearance, featuring a small face framed by short, black flicked hair and brown eyes. She wears a traditional white karate gi passed down from her father, secured with a black belt, with a red sports bra visible beneath her martial arts top. Her most signature accessory is a long yellow headband worn around her neck like a scarf.
Personality
Makoto possesses a straightforward, hot-blooded, and masculine demeanor, paired with an earnest devotion to martial arts and deep affection for her family. Speaking in a distinct Tosa dialect, she carries herself with pride and unyielding resolve. Despite her boyish looks and frank personality, she dislikes being mistaken for a boy. Driven by her determination to revive her dojo, she demonstrates fearless initiative, willing to challenge anyone in order to make a name for her school.
Abilities
Practicing Rindoukan karate, Makoto relies on explosive close-range pressure. Although her walking speed is extremely slow, she boasts the fastest and longest-reaching dash among all fighters, allowing her to close distances in an instant. Her arsenal includes Hayate, a lunging straight punch accompanied by a shout, alongside devastating Super Arts like Seichusen Godanzuki, which hits five consecutive strikes along the opponent's centerline, and Abare Tosanami Kudaki, a fierce combo initiated by a surprise flying kick.
Background
Following the death of her father, the head master of the renowned Rindoukan karate dojo in Tosa, the dojo fell into severe repair and lost its students. Because her older brother lacked martial talent and pursued a corporate job, Makoto inherited the responsibility of restoring the family heritage. To raise money for fixing the decrepit building and to prove her style's supremacy, she entered world martial arts tournaments, including the competition held by S.I.N.
Relationships
Makoto's family consists of her grandfather, who knows of Ryu, her corporate-employee brother, and her late father. In Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, she shares a distinct rivalry with the kunoichi Ibuki, highlighted by a unique opening where they exchange flying kicks. She boldly intercepts Dudley's car before fighting him and counters his views on ladylike decorum. Additionally, she challenges action star Fei Long unannounced to gain publicity, while exchanging practical dojo maintenance advice with fellow owner Dan Hibiki.
Trivia
Makoto loves her family, dislikes red pickled ginger, and possesses a knack for Sunday carpentry (DIY). During voice auditions for Super Street Fighter IV, developers retained her Japanese voice actress, Makoto Tsumura, because no other candidate could accurately produce authentic Tosa dialect. Her character design is widely believed to be inspired by Koharu Hotta from the anime series Princess Nine.
