Overview
Caius Ballad is the primary antagonist of Final Fantasy XIII-2 and a key figure in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Imbued with the heart of the death goddess Etro, he is an immortal warrior who poses a catastrophic threat across multiple timelines. Once a mentor and companion to Noel Kreiss, he stands as a formidable adversary to Serah Farron and Lightning in his violent quest to reshape existence.
Appearance
Caius Ballad is a tall, muscular warrior with long purple hair adorned with feathers and eyes of both blue and red. He wears dark, intricately decorated armor and carries a massive broadsword of distinct design known as Chaos's Revenge.
Personality
Caius maintains a stoic and imposing demeanor driven by an unyielding resolve. Centuries of watching the seeress Paddra Nsu-Yeul suffer repeated early deaths have instilled in him a deep affection for her, alongside profound despair over her cycle of mortality. Though ruthless and stern toward his opponents, he still demonstrates complex paternal feelings toward his former pupil, Noel Kreiss.
Abilities
Possessing the Heart of Chaos from the goddess Etro, Caius commands absolute immortality, preventing him from perishing from lethal injury. By harnessing the power of the goddess's heart, he can transform into the dragon entity known as Bahamut Chaos. He is also a master combatant with his massive sword, Chaos's Revenge, possessing enough martial prowess to defeat Lightning in combat within Valhalla.
Background
As the Guardian of the seeress Paddra Nsu-Yeul, Caius witnessed her die young and undergo endless reincarnations over centuries. Seeking to end her tragedy by destroying time, he clashed with Lightning in Valhalla before engaging Noel Kreiss and Serah Farron in battle, ultimately forcing the destruction of his own heart to plunge the world into chaos. Following the defeat of Bhunivelze, Caius and the accumulated souls of Yeul chose to take the place of the death goddess to preserve cosmic equilibrium.
Relationships
Caius holds a profound devotion to Paddra Nsu-Yeul, driven by a desire to release her from the agony of constant rebirth. He was once a mentor and close friend to Noel Kreiss, though their opposing beliefs eventually forced them into conflict. He serves as the primary enemy to Lightning, fighting her relentlessly in Valhalla, and stands as a formidable obstacle to Serah Farron during her journey.
Trivia
Developer comments highlight Caius Ballad as one of the strongest antagonists in the history of the Final Fantasy franchise. At the conclusion of the story, only the final incarnation of Yeul was released from her duty so that she could remain alongside Noel Kreiss.
