Overview
Clive Rosfield is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy XVI. Born as the first prince of the Grand Duchy of Rosaria, he earns the title of Knight at age fifteen to serve as the Shield for his younger brother Joshua. Following a tragic disaster, he becomes a revenge-driven warrior hunting for a mysterious dark Eikon. As the narrative progresses across three distinct eras of his life, he evolves from a branded imperial slave into a determined leader fighting to change the world's oppressive fate.
Appearance
Clive is a man with short black hair and blue eyes. As he matures, he develops facial stubble. During his young adult years as a branded imperial slave, a dark mark was etched onto his left cheek, which he later erased using a specialized liquid. He wears dark martial attire equipped with a black cape and a red vest.
Personality
Clive possesses a deeply protective nature toward his brother Joshua and an unwavering sense of duty. Though initially consumed by overwhelming guilt and rage following a childhood tragedy, he gradually learns to accept his past with the help of his companions. He becomes a compassionate yet resolved leader, dedicated to ending the systemic mistreatment of Bearers and creating a world where all people can live on their own terms.
Abilities
Clive is a skilled swordsman who blends single-blade fencing techniques with martial kicks in combat. Granted the Blessing of the Phoenix in his youth, he can wield partial fire powers, and he possesses the rare ability to manifest directly as the Eikon Ifrit. Throughout his journey, he gains the unique capacity to absorb and utilize the dynamic powers of other Eikons.
Background
Born to the Archduke of Rosaria, Clive failed to awaken as the Dominant of Fire, leading him to dedicate his early years to mastering swordplay to become his younger brother's official protector. After an ambush at Phoenix Gate claimed his father's life and seemingly destroyed his brother, Clive was captured by the Sanbreque Empire and forced into military servitude as a slave called Wyvern. Thirteen years later, he is freed by Cid and eventually inherits his name and legacy to lead a rebellion against the Mothercrystals.
Relationships
Clive shares a devoted bond with his younger brother Joshua Rosfield, his childhood companion Jill Warrick, and his loyal hound Torgal. While deeply reviled by his birth mother Anabella, he receives strong emotional and logistical support from his uncle Byron Rosfield upon their reunion. After the outlaw Cid passes away, Clive inherits his name and mission to forge a better future.
Trivia
A recognizable action of his in gameplay is forcefully kicking open treasure chests rather than opening them by hand. As the story progresses into his thirties, Clive becomes the oldest primary protagonist in a mainline numbered Final Fantasy title.
