Overview
Fusoya is a prominent supporting character in Final Fantasy IV. As a member of the Lunarian race, he serves as a solemn guardian overseeing his sleeping kin on the moon. He is the older brother of Kluya, making him the uncle of Cecil Harvey and Golbez. Possessing deep knowledge regarding the secrets of the crystals, he temporarily joins the protagonist's party to thwart an impending catastrophe threatening the planet.
Appearance
Fusoya is a right-handed elderly male characterized by a tremendously long beard that covers much of his body. While portrayed as a human in-game, conceptual artwork by Yoshitaka Amano depicts him as an otherworldly entity covered in hair, with sharp-clawed hands extending from the mass. In battle, when rendered unconscious, he uniquely collapses forward, entirely concealing his torso beneath his facial hair.
Personality
Fusoya is a wise, solemn, and highly responsible elder who acts with a profound sense of duty as the guardian of the Lunarians. He exhibits exceptional composure and compassion, guiding the younger generation to protect the planet while showing forgiveness and strong familial resolve toward his nephew Golbez.
Abilities
Fusoya is a master spellcaster who begins with full mastery of every White Magic and Black Magic spell available. He can also execute a unique support ability called Spirit Wave, which grants gradual HP recovery to the entire party over time. However, his maximum MP is fixed at 190 and does not increase through leveling, requiring constant magic replenishment via items or Osmose. Furthermore, his raw intellect and spirit attributes are lower than those of Rosa Farrell and Rydia, making his offensive and healing spells slightly less powerful in magnitude.
Background
Fusoya spent long ages watching over his sleeping populace within the Lunarian Palace until Cecil Harvey and his companions arrived. Joining them to prevent the resurrection of the Giant of Babil, he successfully dispelled Zemus's control over Golbez. Fusoya then fought alongside Golbez to destroy Zemus, but was struck down when Zeromus emerged from the villain's malice. After bestowing his power upon Cecil's party to ensure victory, he returned to eternal slumber on the moon with Golbez. During later events involving crystal disturbances, he reawakened and sacrificed his energy to send Golbez safely down to the Blue Planet, leaving his subsequent fate unknown.
Relationships
Fusoya is the older brother of Kluya and the uncle of both Cecil Harvey and Golbez. After personally severing the mental tether controlling Golbez, he forged a strong bond of trust and fought side-by-side with his nephew. He maintains a resolute antagonism toward Zemus, striving to eradicate the malevolent threat Zemus poses to both the Lunarians and the inhabitants of the Blue Planet.
Trivia
Fusoya's uniquely collapsed battle sprite when incapacitated has long been a memorable point of interest among fans due to its distinct shape. Concept designs by Yoshitaka Amano depict him with an otherworldly appearance far removed from his standard elderly in-game rendering. Additionally, his dramatic dialogue exchange with Golbez encouraging the joint casting of the ultimate Meteor spell during the confrontation with Zemus remains one of the most iconic moments in the title.
