Overview
Dion Lesage is a major character in Final Fantasy XVI. Serving as the Crown Prince of the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, he is also the Dominant of the Eikon Bahamut, the divine symbol of his nation. Celebrated throughout Valisthea as the "King of Dragoons," he commands the elite Holy Dragoon Order and has accumulated numerous heroic victories on the battlefield. Known for his profound sense of honor and genuine concern for his people, Dion is widely beloved by his subjects and trusted implicitly by his subordinates.
Appearance
Dion features medium-length blonde hair, yellow eyes, and worn earrings. He wears heavy armor equipped with shoulder guards and gauntlets layered over a white shirt with frilled sleeves. In combat, he wields a spear as his primary weapon.
Personality
Dion is a thoroughly noble and principled individual who combines deep loyalty to his empire and father with genuine compassion for the populace. Upholding strong chivalric values, he strives to act with wisdom and fairness even under intense pressure. While the corruption of his father drives him to moments of intense anguish and anger, he takes deliberate measures to protect non-combatants during military actions. Underneath his heroic composure lies a deeply feeling heart susceptible to profound grief when pushed beyond his emotional breaking point.
Abilities
As the Dominant of the Eikon Bahamut, Dion can manifest into a mighty dragon, possessing extraordinary aerial combat capabilities that allow him to fight even in outer space. Upon absorbing ether from the Mothercrystal Drake's Tail, he transforms into a radiant golden state capable of unleashing the catastrophic magic spell Zetaflare. Even without transforming, he is an exceptional spearman worthy of his title as the supreme dragoon, and he can fly across vast distances while carrying allies on his back.
Background
Though revered as a victorious military leader, Dion's peaceful life dissolved when his father Emperor Sylvestre married Annabella. Recognizing the dark influence falling over Sanbreque, Dion led the Holy Dragoon Order in a coup d'état to remove Annabella and her son Olivier. Tragically, when Dion threw his spear at Olivier, Sylvestre shielded the child and died instead. Overcome by heartbreak and manipulation, Dion transformed into Bahamut and went on a rampage that devastated the Crystal Dominion. After being brought down by Clive Rosfield and Joshua Rosfield, Dion sought redemption and ultimately sacrificed his life as a shield during the final battle against Ultima at Origin.
Relationships
Dion held profound love and reverence for his father, Emperor Sylvestre, though their bond was tragically severed by his stepmother Annabella and half-brother Olivier. He maintains a deep, decade-long romantic relationship and partnership with his close aide, Terence. Although he initially battled Clive Rosfield and Joshua Rosfield while out of control, Dion later aligned with them as trusted allies, giving his life to protect them during the final assault.
Trivia
Dion's unleashing of the spell Zetaflare in his Eikonic form marks its first visual appearance in a main numbered Final Fantasy title. Additionally, his archetype as an honorable dragoon knight who faces intense internal conflict regarding his father and kingdom draws stylistic parallels to several prominent dragoons throughout the franchise's history.
