Overview
Hope Estheim is a major character in the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy by Square Enix. Initially appearing as a fourteen-year-old boy who summons the Eidolon Alexander, he becomes a l'Cie and is forced into flight from the Sanctum. In Final Fantasy XIII-2, he resurfaces as an adult leading scientific research at the Academy, while in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, he mysterious reverts to his younger form to guide the Savior, Lightning, from the Ark.
Appearance
Hope has short white or grey hair and blue eyes. In his initial appearance, he stands at 153 cm as a young teenager wearing a short-sleeved jacket, pants, and gloves, with a cloth wrapped around his left arm to conceal his l'Cie brand. In Final Fantasy XIII-2, he reaches a height of 180 cm as a adult, though he returns to his original youthful appearance in Lightning Returns.
Personality
Raised in an affluent household in Palumpolum, Hope begins as a sensitive and quiet teenager. Devastated by the death of his mother during the Purge, he initially harbours intense resentment toward Snow Villiers. However, through his travels alongside Lightning, he confronts his emotional projection and undergoes significant character growth. As an adult, he turns into an intelligent, highly resilient, and dependable figure committed to aiding humanity.
Abilities
In combat, Hope wields a boomerang and excels in magic attacks rather than physical weapons. He boasts the highest Magic stat among the party members, serving predominantly as a Ravager, Synergist, and Medic while learning high-tier spells at an early stage. His unique command is the Ravager ability Last Resort, and he holds the power to summon the Eidolon Alexander, though he has the lowest maximum health of the main cast.
Background
Living in Palumpolum with his parents, Bartolomeu and Nora, Hope's life changes drastically when he and his mother are caught in the Purge. After Nora dies in the conflict, Hope holds Snow responsible for her loss. Turned into a l'Cie by a fal'Cie from Pulse, he flees with Lightning, eventually reconciling with his surviving father and forgiving Snow. Years later, he achieves a key leadership position within the Academy, driving technological initiatives such as artificial Cocoon development.
Relationships
Hope initially blamed Snow Villiers for the death of his mother, Nora Estheim, though he eventually overcomes his anger and reconciles with him. While he experienced friction with his father, Bartolomeu Estheim, their relationship mends after a reunion in Palumpolum. Hope forms a close bond with Lightning, drawing inspiration from her resolve during their flight, and also travels alongside Oerba Dia Vanille following their escape from the Purge train.
Trivia
In Final Fantasy XIII-2, Hope makes use of cold sleep technology to navigate across several centuries, assisting Noel and Serah. His revert back to a younger form in Lightning Returns is the result of being abducted, repeatedly reincarnated, and manipulated by the deity Bhunivelze to serve as a tool.
