Overview
Vincent Valentine is a prominent character appearing throughout the Final Fantasy VII series, serving as the primary protagonist of the action game Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-. Formerly an agent of the Turks—the elite intelligence agency of the Shinra Electric Power Company—he acquired an unaging body and terrifying physical transformations following forced genetic research. After decades of self-imposed slumber inside a subterranean coffin at the Shinra Manor in Nibelheim, he is awakened by Cloud Strife and joins the party to settle a long-standing personal vendetta against Professor Hojo.
Appearance
Vincent is a tall man with long black hair, maintaining a physical appearance of approximately twenty-seven years of age. He wears dark attire underneath a bright red mantle, complemented by a matching red headband. His equipment includes gloves, clawed gauntlets, and firearms. During his prior service with the Turks, his hair was cut short and neatly styled.
Personality
Vincent maintains a quiet and reserved demeanor, giving off a solitary impression. Beneath his distant exterior, however, he harbors intense emotions, deep empathy, and a strong moral conviction. He carries a heavy burden of guilt regarding tragic events in his past, which drives his self-reflective nature. Having been cut off from society for decades, he occasionally demonstrates an amusing unfamiliarity with modern technology and contemporary culture.
Abilities
He relies on handguns for long-range combat, maintaining full offensive power regardless of his position on the battlefield. His strikes boast perfect accuracy, granting exceptional synergy with the Deathblow command materia, and his signature ultimate weapon, Death Penalty, grows stronger as it defeats enemies. Biological experiments granted him suspended physical aging, unnatural regenerative speed, and superior physical prowess. In combat, his Limit Break induces transformations into monstrous forms: the bipedal Galian Beast, the massive Death Gigas, the chainsaw-wielding Hellmasker, and the winged demon Chaos. While transformed, he loses self-control and attacks targets endlessly until they are defeated.
Background
As a Turk assigned to guard the scientific staff of the Jenova Project, Vincent fell in love with scientist Lucrecia Crescent. However, she ultimately married Professor Hojo and permitted their unborn child to be used for experimental research. Vincent tried to dissuade them, but his efforts failed. When he later confronted Hojo, the doctor shot him and subjected his dying body to genetic modification. The experiments halted his aging and gave him beastly powers, but overcome with remorse for failing to protect Lucrecia, Vincent sealed himself in a coffin beneath Shinra Manor until Cloud Strife's group discovered him years later.
Relationships
Vincent holds deep affection and persistent regret toward Lucrecia Crescent, whose tragic involvement in Shinra's research remains his central guilt. Professor Hojo is his bitter enemy, responsible for shooting him and altering his body against his will. He bonds with Cloud Strife and his companions over their shared mission to track down Sephiroth, and he shares a history with Verdot, his former superior officer during his time with the Turks.
Trivia
During his active service with the Turks, Vincent set training scores so exceptionally high that they remained completely unbroken, earning him the title 'Turk of Turks.' He made a guest appearance as a secret character in the fighting game Ehrgeiz, where players could select between his standard costume and a business suit. In the original Final Fantasy VII game, he is an optional recruit who does not need to be added to the party to complete the main storyline.
