Overview
Joshua Rosfield is a central character in Final Fantasy XVI. As the second prince of the Grand Duchy of Rosaria, he is the Dominant of the fire Eikon Phoenix and the younger brother of the protagonist, Clive Rosfield. Caught in a horrific tragedy during his youth, he miraculously survives and grows into a determined young man who seeks the hidden truths of the world, fighting alongside his brother to save humanity from impending destruction.
Appearance
In his youth, Joshua features short blonde hair with strands hanging between his blue eyes. As he grows into adulthood, he matures into a refined young man who wears gloves. When utilizing or manifesting his powers as a Dominant, fiery wings appear on his body.
Personality
Despite his royal heritage, Joshua is gentle, polite, and treats everyone equally regardless of status. He prefers reading and intellectual pursuits over martial skills, partly due to his frail physical constitution. He often feels guilty that he inherited the Phoenix instead of his revered older brother, though he harbors an unyielding resolve to protect those he cares about. Notably, his strong dislike for carrots persists throughout his adulthood.
Abilities
As the Dominant of the Phoenix, Joshua commands formidable fire-based abilities, including the power to heal through the Flames of Rebirth as well as erect fiery shields. Using these powers, however, places extreme physical stress on his delicate body. He can fully manifest into the Phoenix for aerial combat, and is capable of merging with Clive's Eikon to form Ifrit Risen for cosmic-scale warfare. Furthermore, he possesses the immense spiritual capacity to seal the divine entity Ultima within his own chest.
Background
At ten years old, Joshua witnessed the slaughter of his father and guards during the tragedy at Phoenix Gate. Overwhelmed by distress, he transformed into the Phoenix and went berserk, only to be defeated in a fierce clash with a second fire Eikon and presumed dead. In truth, he was rescued by the Undying, recovering after years in a coma and long rehabilitation. Operating in secrecy under the alias Margrace, he traveled the realm investigating Ultima's schemes before reuniting with Clive after eighteen years to face the global crisis together.
Relationships
Joshua deeply admires and implicitly trusts his older brother, Clive Rosfield, viewing him as his true knight. He shares a sibling-like affection with his childhood friend Jill Warrick and retains a close bond with their hound Torgal. Although doted on by his mother Annabella, he was pained by her cruel actions. He also forms a connection of profound mutual respect and cooperation with Dion Lesage of the Holy Empire of Sanbreque.
Trivia
In a distant future shown after the story's conclusion, a bound book titled "Final Fantasy" exists with Joshua Rosfield listed as its author, leaving the true circumstances of its creation open to multiple interpretations.
