Overview
Setzer Gabbiani is a playable character from Final Fantasy VI who lives by his own rules, unconcerned with conventional morality. As the owner of the Blackjack, a unique airship housing a flying casino, he soars through the skies in search of high-stakes thrills. He also makes cameo appearances in titles such as Kingdom Hearts II.
Appearance
Setzer features long white hair and purple eyes, with visible scars across his face resulting from gambling disputes. He wears a long coat, jewelry, and an ascot scarf around his neck, and starts with a bandana equipped.
Personality
Driven by excitement, Setzer despises cowardice and appreciates anyone bold enough to take big risks. He makes decisions based on personal interest rather than duty or righteousness, showing a stylish flair and a willingness to gamble everything on a single match.
Abilities
In battle, Setzer uses cards, darts, and dice as weapons. His unique command, Slot, produces random magic or physical effects based on the matching symbols, ranging from instant-death attacks to minor party healing. Equipped with a specific accessory, his command changes to Gil Toss, throwing money to damage all enemies. He also wields special weapons like the Fixed Dice, which deal powerful defense-bypassing damage.
Background
Setzer initially enters the story planning to kidnap an opera star, but encounters Celes Chere in disguise. Intrigued by her daring gamble during a coin toss, he joins the fight against the Gestahlian Empire. After losing the Blackjack during the world's devastation, he sinks into despair until he is persuaded to revive the Falcon, an airship formerly owned by his late friend Darill.
Relationships
Setzer forms a bond with Celes Chere after she wins his cooperation through a rigged coin toss, and she later encourages him to take to the skies once more. He holds deep respect for his late friend and fellow airship pilot, Darill, whose memory lives on through her ship, the Falcon. He travels alongside allies like Edgar Roni Figaro and Locke Cole.
Trivia
The concept of a gambler job had been considered earlier in the Final Fantasy series before officially debuting with Setzer in Final Fantasy VI. His starting bandana accessory cannot be re-equipped once removed.
