Overview

Hugo Vlad is an Ice-attribute Attack Agent in Zenless Zone Zero and the enigmatic leader of the phantom thief group Mockingbird. Operating under the guise of an art dealer, he orchestrates high-profile thefts alongside his accomplice Vivian Banshee. Highly intelligent and theatrically charismatic, he plays the role of an anti-hero who manipulates the wealthy elite, though his ruthless pragmatic shift eventually drove a bitter wedge between him and his former partner, Von Lycaon.

Appearance

He has long blonde hair tied in a low ponytail with a braided strand and a prominent ahoge, alongside pointed ears, sharp fangs, and heterochromatic eyes—blue or gray on the right, red on the left—with two beauty marks beneath his left eye. He wears a dark navy shirt, a necktie, black shoes, a single black glove, a ring, and a suit jacket with a pearl-blue lining, adorned with gold and silver medal accents on his right chest. He occasionally complements his attire with a top hat, a mask, a scarf, or an overcoat.

Personality

On the surface, Hugo maintains the refined, soft-spoken demeanor of a cultured gentleman, often ironically describing himself as a weak scholar. In reality, he possesses a sharp, manipulative mind and a cynical worldview. He believes the true worth of any treasure lies in the story behind it rather than its material value. Driven by childhood trauma, he harbors severe self-directed resentment and believes that true justice in an unfair world sometimes demands cold, irreversible violence.

Abilities

Hugo wields 'Final Notice,' a lethal transforming scythe cleverly concealed as a silver briefcase. In combat, he seamlessly alternates between heavy scythe slashes and long-range crossbow shots to confuse opponents with sudden distance shifts. His fighting style excels at capitalizing on stunned enemies, unleashing massive burst damage through enhanced special skills and ultimate attacks. Outside of combat, he possesses master-class skills in deception, lockpicking, disguise, and espionage.

Background

Born as an illegitimate child of the Ravenlock family, Hugo spent his early youth in poverty before being brought into the family home, where he endured severe abuse amidst a brutal succession contest. After taking the blame for his sister Serena's murder to survive, he eventually fled and was taken in by Old Jack, who taught him thief craft alongside Von Lycaon. Together they founded Mockingbird, but Hugo's decision to break their code of non-lethality during a confrontation with his father led to a tragic fallout with Lycaon.

Relationships

Von Lycaon was once Hugo's closest confidant and co-founder of Mockingbird, but their clash of ideals transformed their bond into a complex, bitter rivalry. He treats Vivian Banshee with protective affection, seeing the shadow of his deceased sister Serena in her and guiding her as his partner. Meanwhile, he holds a deep-seated vengeful animosity toward his uncle, Hartman Ravenlock, over their family's bloody legacy.

Trivia

His surname 'Vlad' is a reference to Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure behind the Dracula legend. Despite his uncanny vampire-like features and low blood sugar, Hugo is fully aware that vampires are merely fictional concepts from the old civilization and explicitly denies being one.
