Overview
Agatsuma Zenitsu is one of the central characters in the manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a sixteen-year-old swordsman belonging to the Demon Slayer Corps who travels alongside the protagonist Kamado Tanjirou and Hashibira Inosuke. Trained under the Thunder Breathing style, Zenitsu usually appears as an extraordinarily cowardly, noisy, and pessimistic youth who fears dying in battle. Despite his pathetic everyday demeanor, he transforms into a formidable warrior under extreme stress, possessing unmatched speed and precision.
Appearance
Zenitsu features blunt-cut golden hair with orange tips, which turned from black after he was hit by lightning. He has thick, down-turned eyebrows split into two at the ends and golden eyes with dark circles beneath them. He wears the standard black Demon Slayer Corps uniform with the character for destroy on the back, covered by a yellow-orange haori with white triangular scale patterns. His Nichirin sword features a white scabbard and hilt with gold accents, and a blade decorated with a yellow lightning design. During an undercover mission, he also wore a poorly painted female persona named Zenko.
Personality
Zenitsu possesses an extraordinarily negative and cowardly temperament, constantly crying and screaming out of terror at the prospect of dying. Driven by a desperate fear of dying unmarried, he frequently hits on women, making a nuisance of himself. Beneath his hysterical and self-deprecating surface, however, he is fundamentally a kindhearted and noble individual. Even when overwhelmed by fear, he courageously risks his safety to protect children and his friends' cherished possessions. When those around him act foolishly, his mindset shifts rapidly into that of a levelheaded straight man.
Abilities
Zenitsu possesses extraordinary hearing, enabling him to discern human emotions, heartbeats, and the presence of demons from ambient sounds. When terror reaches its limit, he faints into a sleepwalking state, removing emotional subconscious barriers to unleash lethal combat skill. Concentrating on Thunder Breathing, he mastered its First Form: Thunderclap and Flash, developing enhanced variants like Sixfold, Eightfold, and Godspeed. He also independently created a unique Seventh Form, Honoikazuchi no Kami, an ultra-high-speed charging strike.
Background
Raised as an orphan without knowing his birth parents, Zenitsu accumulated massive debt after being deceived by a woman. The former Thunder Hashira, Jigoro Kuwajima, settled his debt and took him in as a disciple, subjecting him to grueling training. After surviving the Final Selection, Zenitsu joined the Demon Slayer Corps and partnered with Tanjirou and Inosuke on dangerous assignments. When his senior disciple Kaigaku turned into a demon, causing Kuwajima's suicide, Zenitsu resolved to defeat him in battle. Following the final victory against the demon progenitor, he settled down to a peaceful civilian life with his comrades.
Relationships
Zenitsu forms a deep bond of friendship with Kamado Tanjirou, relying on his kindness and trusting him wholeheartedly. He falls in love with Kamado Nezuko at first sight, steadfastly protecting her throughout their journey and ultimately confessing his love after the war. He views his master, Jigoro Kuwajima, as a beloved grandfather figure, whereas he harbors intense bitterness toward his senior fellow disciple Kaigaku, who betrayed the Corps. Though often exasperated by Hashibira Inosuke, Zenitsu shares an enduring camaraderie with him.
Trivia
Unusually for a Demon Slayer, Zenitsu was assigned a sparrow named Chuntaro instead of the standard Kasugai Crow. Possessing perfect pitch and artistic sensibility, he exhibits remarkable skill when playing string instruments like the shamisen. In official character popularity polls, he achieved second place in the first poll and claimed first place in the second poll. In his later years, he authored an embellished autobiography titled Zenitsu-den, detailing the trials and exploits of his journey.
