Overview
Kuwajima Jigorou is a supporting character in Koyoharu Gotouge's manga series Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a retired Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, formerly holding the title of Roaring Hashira, who later settled on Mount Momoyama to serve as a cultivator for Thunder Breathing users. Acting as the strict yet deeply caring mentor to Agatsuma Zenitsu and Kaigaku, he is affectionately called Grandpa by the former. Despite his harsh training regimen, he possesses unwavering dedication to raising the next generation of swordsmen.
Appearance
Kuwajima Jigorou is an elderly man of short stature with silver hair, black eyes, a prominent facial mustache and beard, and a noticeable large scar across his left cheek. After losing a leg during a battle against a demon at thirty-five years of age, he wears a wooden prosthetic on his right leg and relies on a walking cane for mobility. His outfit includes a haori decorated with a geometric pattern identical in design to the one worn by Agatsuma Zenitsu.
Personality
Characterized by his stern and uncompromising demeanor, Kuwajima Jigorou acts as a fierce taskmaster who relentlessly scolds and retrieves disciples when they attempt to flee training. Beneath his harsh exterior lies profound affection and patience; he refuses to give up on those in his care. When Agatsuma Zenitsu struggled with self-doubt, Kuwajima Jigorou provided constant encouragement, urging him to hone his sole functional technique to perfection rather than despair over his limitations.
Abilities
As a former Roaring Hashira, Kuwajima Jigorou is a master of Total Concentration Thunder Breathing and the only practitioner shown capable of performing all six of its primary forms. These include the high-speed straight charge of the First Form, Thunderclap and Flash, through to the widespread lightning strikes of the Sixth Form, Rumble and Flash. Following his retirement from active duty, he utilized his extensive expertise to train new combatants for the Demon Slayer Corps.
Background
After losing his leg in combat at thirty-five, Kuwajima Jigorou stepped down as a Hashira and began training swordsmen on Mount Momoyama. He paid off Agatsuma Zenitsu's financial debt to rescue him from exploitation, taking him in alongside his senior disciple, Kaigaku. Hoping they would complement each other's technical flaws, he designated both as joint successors. However, when Kaigaku surrendered to a powerful demon to save his own life, Kuwajima Jigorou took full responsibility for his student's betrayal by committing ritual suicide without an assistant to end his suffering. In the afterlife, he tearfully reunited with Agatsuma Zenitsu to praise his achievements.
Relationships
He shared a deep bond with Agatsuma Zenitsu, who addressed him affectionately as a grandfather figure. Kuwajima Jigorou consistently believed in Zenitsu's latent strength even when others dismissed him. Conversely, his relationship with his senior pupil, Kaigaku, ended tragically when Kaigaku's treason forced Kuwajima Jigorou into self-sacrifice. He also maintained a camaraderie with fellow retired Hashira Urokodaki Sakonji, a relationship that persists into their peaceful reincarnated lives.
Trivia
In official character popularity polls, Kuwajima Jigorou ranked 54th with 45 votes. Supplementary material from an art exhibition revealed that he was involved in Urokodaki Sakonji's decision to wear his signature Tengu mask during their time as contemporary Hashira. In the modern-era epilogue, his reincarnation enjoys playing shogi with Urokodaki Sakonji's reincarnation, occasionally becoming annoyed at Kamado Takahiko for running through his yard.
