Kokushibou

Overview

Kokushibou is a major antagonist in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, serving as the highest-ranking demon, Upper Rank One, within Kibutsuji Muzan's Twelve Kizuki. Formerly a human swordsman named Tsugikuni Michikatsu, he was an early Demon Slayer who mastered breathing techniques before abandoning his humanity in pursuit of eternal life and martial power. Driven by a deep-seated complex and envy toward his prodigy twin brother, Tsugikuni Yoriichi, Kokushibou maintains his supreme rank for centuries. Possessing immense composure and formidable swordsmanship, he stands as one of the most powerful opponents faced by the Demon Slayer Corps.

Appearance

Standing 190 cm tall and weighing 93 kg, Kokushibou has a towering, muscular build with long black hair tipped in red tied in a high ponytail. His face features six eyes with golden irises and red sclera; the central pair displays the kanji for Upper Rank and One. Crimson flame-like marks spread across his upper forehead and lower jaw. He wears a purple patterned kimono over black hakama pants. At his waist, he carries Kyokoku Kamusari, a flesh-crafted katana lined with pulsating veins and numerous eyes along its blade, guard, and hilt.

Personality

Kokushibou is characterized by a stoic, highly composed demeanor, speaking in slow, deliberate sentences with frequent pauses. He adheres strictly to samurai etiquette and maintains a firm belief in organizational hierarchy, swiftly disciplining lower-ranked demons who disrupt order. Unlike many demonic peers, he respects true strength, openly praising opponent Hashira for their refined skill and physical mastery. Beneath his quiet dignity, however, resides a deep-seated bitterness. Centuries of unyielding jealousy toward his insanely gifted younger brother drive his eternal search for absolute power.

Abilities

Kokushibou combines his Blood Demon Art with Total Concentration Breathing to utilize Moon Breathing, featuring sixteen distinct forms—the most of any style. His slashes produce wide-range shockwaves surrounded by erratic, size-shifting crescent blades. He wields Kyokoku Kamusari, a flesh-bound sword that can regenerate, branch out, and extend. Through the Transparent World, he perceives opponents' internal muscular and skeletal movements to anticipate actions. Continuously buffed by his Demon Slayer Mark, he possesses extraordinary battle speed, instant physical regeneration, and the capacity to overcome decapitation through sheer resolution.

Background

Born during the Sengoku period as Tsugikuni Michikatsu, he was the elder twin in a samurai family. Upon realizing that his younger brother Yoriichi possessed incomprehensible martial genius, Michikatsu developed a bitter complex. Although he initially inherited his household and raised a family after Yoriichi vanished, a chance encounter with his brother during a demon attack spurred Michikatsu to abandon his wife and children, joining the Demon Slayer Corps. Unable to master Sun Breathing, he created Moon Breathing. Fearing the premature death linked to awakening his Demon Slayer Mark and desperate to surpass Yoriichi, Michikatsu accepted Kibutsuji Muzan's blood, transforming into the demon Kokushibou.

Relationships

Tsugikuni Yoriichi is Kokushibou's younger twin brother and the source of his eternal envy and complex. He serves Kibutsuji Muzan with unyielding loyalty, with Muzan viewing him as a respected business partner. Tokito Muichiro is a direct descendant of the lineage Michikatsu left behind in his human life. Among fellow demons, Kokushibou favored Akaza for his absolute dedication to martial mastery, sparing his life after a blood battle challenge. He also turned the disgraced Demon Slayer Kaigaku into a demon, facilitating his rise to the Upper Ranks.

Trivia

During his human life, Michikatsu enjoyed playing Go as a pastime. He is exceptionally rare among the Twelve Kizuki for being one of only two demons capable of wielding Total Concentration Breathing techniques alongside a Blood Demon Art. In the second official character popularity poll, Kokushibou ranked 14th with 2,938 votes. In the official spin-off setting Kimetsu Academy, he is depicted as an enigmatic secretary and bodyguard to Kibutsuji.
