Overview
Gyokko is a major antagonist in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, serving as Upper Rank Five within the Twelve Kizuki under Muzan Kibutsuji. Residing inside porcelain vessels, he possesses a grotesque form far removed from human shape. Self-proclaimed as a supreme artist, he derives sadistic pleasure from transforming human bodies into grotesque sculptures. During the Swordsmith Village Arc, he launches a devastating raid to destroy the Demon Slayer Corps' primary weapon-crafting hub.
Appearance
In his standard state, Gyokko features an armless, muscular white upper torso and a long, dark, serpentine lower body attached to a porcelain pot. His distorted face displays green-lipped mouths in place of eyes, while eyes reside on his forehead and mouth location. Small extra arms grow from his head and torso, and his hair shows a pink-to-purple gradient. Upon molting into his true form, the auxiliary arms disappear, replaced by webbed muscular arms at the shoulders. Diamond-hard scales coat his skin and tail, creating a hybrid merman-like body.
Personality
Gyokko maintains a politely insolent front while concealing a deeply sadistic and narcissistic temperament. He takes immense pride in his identity as a supreme artist, holding absolute confidence in his horrific creations, and flies into an extreme rage if anyone mocks his craftsmanship or calls his pots uneven. He is obsessed with Muzan Kibutsuji, taking perverse satisfaction even in harsh punishment from his master. At the same time, he is incredibly petty; when witnessing Hotaru Haganezuka's intense concentration while polishing a blade, Gyokko becomes consumed by jealousy and focuses on breaking the blacksmith's spirit rather than simply killing him.
Abilities
Gyokko's Blood Demon Art relies on porcelain pots for spatial teleportation and summoning aquatic familiars. His arsenal includes Senbonbari Gyosatsu, deploying giant goldfish that fire paralyzing needles, and Water Prison Pot, which traps victims in a dense fluid sphere that suffocates them and disables breathing techniques. He can manifest giant elastic octopus limbs with Takotsubo Jigoku and unleash 10,000 toxic fish via Ichiman Kakkū Nengyo. In his true form, his God's Hand transforms any touched matter into living fish, while Jinsatsu Gyorin allows erratic, ultra-high-speed bouncing attacks.
Background
As a human, Gyokko was named Managi. After transforming into a demon, he lived for over 150 years, eventually rising to Upper Rank Five. Upon discovering the location of the hidden Swordsmith Village, he launched a surprise raid alongside Hantengu. He attacked the local artisans and trapped the Mist Hashira, Muichiro Tokito, inside a water sphere. However, by squandering time attempting to ruin Hotaru Haganezuka's focus, he allowed Muichiro to escape. Enraged into revealing his true form, Gyokko was ultimately outmaneuvered and decapitated by a marked Muichiro.
Relationships
Gyokko displays fanatic loyalty to his master, Muzan Kibutsuji, who values him in part because Gyokko's high-quality pots generate substantial funds. In combat, he faces Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito, who drives Gyokko to blinding rage by calling his pots asymmetrical before decapitating him. Gyokko also targets the blacksmith Hotaru Haganezuka out of intense artistic jealousy over his concentration. He coordinates the village invasion with fellow Upper Rank Hantengu, while interacting with other Upper Ranks like Doma, who praises his pottery.
Trivia
Unlike several other Upper Ranks, Gyokko lacks a special neck-decapitation survival gimmick, perishing normally once his head is severed by a Nichirin blade. His visual design and techniques center heavily on aquatic organisms and ceramics. Details regarding his human past under the name Managi were presented in the official fanbook rather than the main manga storyline. In the second official popularity poll, he placed 52nd.
