Overview

Karaku is a supporting antagonist in the manga and anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is one of the distinct clone manifestations created by Hantengu, the Upper Rank Four demon of the Twelve Kizuki, specifically representing the emotion of pleasure. Arising alongside fellow emotion-based clones during combat against the Demon Slayer Corps, Karaku embodies a hedonistic demeanor. His name is believed to derive from an idiom describing delight in the misfortunes of others. As a split form of Hantengu, he possesses distinct combat tools and physical traits that set him apart from his fellow clones.

Appearance

Karaku appears as a dark-skinned, muscular male demon with horns and long black hair featuring strands falling between his eyes. He has pointy ears, sharp fangs, and green eyes set against colored sclera. The kanji character for pleasure is distinctly engraved on his tongue. He wears a loosely styled tengu outfit consisting of a bare upper body draped with a pom-pom-adorned monk's kesa, paired with tatsuke-hakama pants while remaining barefoot. He carries a large feather fan shaped like a fatsia leaf.

Personality

Reflecting the emotion he represents, Karaku possesses a highly hedonistic personality. He approaches life-or-death battles as mere entertainment, seeking personal enjoyment and excitement above all else. However, he is easily bored and prone to overconfidence. Karaku's focus on his own amusement often causes him to drop his guard during combat, leaving critical openings for his opponents. This careless attitude creates a sharp contrast with the calm, austere nature of Sekido, though it shares similarities with Urogi's lighthearted behavior.

Abilities

Karaku fights using a feather fan generated from his own flesh, resembling a fatsia leaf. By waving this weapon, he releases powerful gusts of wind capable of destroying building floors and leaving crater-like impressions in the ground shaped like the fan itself. The wind technique functions only while the fan remains in contact with Karaku's physical body. Consequently, if the weapon is severed alongside his arm, an opponent can utilize its power against him, as demonstrated when Nezuko Kamado tore off his arm and blew Karaku away with his own fan.

Background

Karaku manifested when the Upper Rank Four demon Hantengu was decapitated during the conflict at the Swordsmith Village, splitting into several emotional avatars. Engaging the Demon Slayer Corps, Karaku prioritized his own amusement, which backfired when Nezuko Kamado ripped away his arm along with his weapon to blast him far from the battlefield. Upon returning to fight, Karaku was decapitated alongside Sekido and Urogi by Tanjiro Kamado's Hinokami Kagura technique, Sun Halo Dragon Head Dance. Severely damaged by the attack, Karaku was abruptly absorbed by an enraged Sekido, merging along with Urogi to give rise to Zohakuten.

Relationships

Karaku originates from the Upper Rank Four demon Hantengu and shares a close connection with his fellow split avatars: Sekido, Urogi, and Aizetsu. His lighthearted demeanor often draws frustration from Sekido, who ultimately absorbs Karaku and Urogi to form Zohakuten. Karaku shares a similarly carefree outlook with Urogi, contrasting with the more restrained clones. In battle, he views enemies like Tanjiro Kamado and Nezuko Kamado not merely as targets, but as sources of entertainment, leading him to underestimate their capabilities.

Trivia

Karaku's name is believed to be derived from the idiom Kosai-rakka, which refers to taking pleasure in the misfortunes of others. Within the group of Hantengu's split avatars based on traditional human emotions, Karaku serves as the personification of pleasure.
