Overview

Shinazugawa Genya is a supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is the younger brother of the Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa, and trains under the Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima. As one of the five recruits who passed the Final Selection alongside Tanjiro Kamado, he fights demons using a unique physical constitution and battle style despite being unable to use Breathing Styles.

Appearance

Genya has sharp eyes and a large horizontal scar running across the left side of his face and nose. He wears his dark hair in a mohawk style with shaved sides. Over the black Demon Slayer uniform, he wears a sleeveless purple kimono top paired with Western-style trousers and shoes or white tabi. He carries a short, colorless Nichirin sword alongside a shortened double-barreled shotgun. When undergoing demonification, his teeth turn into fangs and his hair tips and eye colors change.

Personality

Initially presented as ill-tempered, rude, and desperate for results, Genya is deep down a caring and straightforward young man who profoundly values his family. Driven by a desire to apologize to his older brother, his aggressive exterior fades after fighting alongside Tanjiro Kamado, revealing a surprisingly sensible, earnest, and somewhat self-conscious boy who easily freezes up around teenage girls.

Abilities

Lacking the ability to use Breathing Styles or traditional swordsmanship, Genya relies on high physical endurance and a unique digestive system known as Demon Eating. By consuming demon flesh, he temporarily gains demonic power, enhanced regeneration, and even blood arts matching the strength of the eaten demon. In combat, he pairs a short Nichirin blade with a double-barreled shotgun firing sunlight-infused bullets, and uses a technique called Repetitive Action to maximize his concentration.

Background

Born as the second eldest of seven siblings, Genya promised to help his brother Sanemi protect their family. After their mother was turned into a demon and killed their younger siblings, a tragic misunderstanding led Genya to call Sanemi a murderer. Driven by remorse and the hope of seeking forgiveness, Genya joined the Demon Slayer Corps despite his inability to use Breathing. He studied under Gyomei Himejima and grew closer to his allies through key battles in the Swordsmith Village and the Hashira Training.

Relationships

Sanemi Shinazugawa is Genya's older brother; despite Sanemi's harsh rejection, Genya seeks his acknowledgment and forgiveness. Gyomei Himejima acts as his master, taking him in to teach him advanced mental conditioning. Although he was hostile toward Tanjiro Kamado during the Final Selection, the two eventually built a bond of deep trust. He also establishes a respectful friendship with Muichiro Tokito during their training and joint battles.

Trivia

His unique haircut is maintained because his hair is naturally frizzy everywhere except the top, which would look strange if left untrimmed. His favorite food is watermelon, and his hobby is cultivating bonsai trees. In the official spin-off Kimetsu Academy, he is portrayed as the star athlete of the shooting club who struggles with mathematics.
