Overview
Akaza is a major antagonist in the manga and anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Serving directly under Muzan Kibutsuji, he holds the position of Upper Rank Three within the Twelve Kizuki and is known by the moniker 'Fist Demon.' Distinct from most demons, he fights exclusively bare-handed using martial arts and dedicates his centuries of existence to the continuous pursuit of absolute strength. Formerly a human named Hakuji, he adheres to a strict rule of never killing or devouring women.
Appearance
Akaza resembles a lean, muscular young man with pale skin, short plum-red hair, and light pink eyebrows. His almond-shaped eyes feature pale blue sclera with crack-like patterns and yellow irises etched with the kanji for 'Upper Rank' in his right eye and 'Three' in his left. Dark blue line tattoos cover his face and body, while his fingers and toes are stained blue with nails matching his hair color. He wears a sleeveless purplish-red vest over his bare chest, loose white martial-arts pants, and prayer beads around both ankles.
Personality
Akaza is a disciplined martial artist obsessed with attaining the peak of martial perfection. He holds immense respect for formidable combatants, often praising their techniques and urging them to become immortal demons so they can battle indefinitely. Conversely, he despises those he considers weak or cowardly. While usually cold and taciturn around his master and fellow Upper Ranks, he displays violent hostility toward Douma. His moral code fundamentally stems from his deep-seated hatred of dishonorable behavior.
Abilities
Akaza fights using unarmed martial arts enhanced by his Blood Demon Art, 'Destructive Death.' Central to his style is the 'Compass Needle,' which allows him to perceive an opponent's fighting spirit and deliver perfectly timed strikes. His regenerative capabilities are among the highest of the Upper Ranks, enabling him to instantly reattach severed limbs and heal lethal wounds in a blink. Upon being decapitated by a Nichirin Sword, his conviction allowed him to overcome the standard weakness of demons and regenerate his head.
Background
Born as Hakuji in Edo, he resorted to theft to buy medicine for his sick father, who eventually took his own life to stop his son's crimes. After being taken in by Keizo, master of the Soryu Dojo, Hakuji reformed while caring for Keizo's delicate daughter, Koyuki. They eventually engaged to be married, but a rival dojo cowardly poisoned the dojo's well, killing both Keizo and Koyuki. Enraged, Hakuji slaughtered 67 members of the rival school bare-handed. Traumatized and aimless, he was forcibly turned into a demon by Muzan Kibutsuji, losing his human memories. Centuries later, during his duel against Tanjiro and Giyu in the Infinity Castle, he regained his lost memories and chose to end his own life.
Relationships
Akaza serves Muzan Kibutsuji faithfully, earning a degree of favor from his master. His Blood Demon Art techniques and snowflake motifs subconsciously originate from his human master Keizo and his fiancée Koyuki. He killed the Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku at the Mugen Train after persistently trying to recruit him into demonhood, and later engaged in a fierce battle with Tanjiro Kamado and Giyu Tomioka. He holds intense animosity toward fellow Upper Rank Douma, frequently attacking him, and harbors a desire to surpass and kill Kokushibo.
Trivia
The snowflake design of Akaza's Compass Needle Blood Demon Art is modeled after Koyuki's hair ornament, and the names of his attacks originate from the fireworks he watched with her during his human life. The official pronunciation of his name places the accent on the first syllable. He is notable for being one of the few demons who chose self-destruction after recovering his human memories.
