Overview

Douma is a major antagonist in the manga and anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Serving under Kibutsuji Muzan, he holds the position of Upper Rank Two within the Twelve Kizuki, the elite group of demons. In human society, he operates as the leader of the Eternal Paradise Cult. Behind his calm demeanor, gentle speech, and constant carefree smile lies a completely hollow individual who lacks any genuine human emotion or empathy, viewing his brutal acts of cannibalism as a noble act of spiritual salvation.

Appearance

Douma appears as a pale young man with silver-oak hair worn long with flipped tips, marked at the crown by a blood-red stain pattern. He possesses iridescent rainbow eyes, with the left eye etched with the characters for Upper Rank and the right with the number Two. His face is framed by thick eyebrows, downturned eyes, prominent fangs, and long fingernails. He wears a Western-style kimono over a fitted undergarment and carries a pair of sharp golden folding fans decorated with lotus motifs.

Personality

Born without the ability to feel emotion, Douma is fundamentally hollow and incapable of experiencing fear, sorrow, joy, or empathy. Despite this emptiness, his high intellect allows him to convincingly mimic warmth, friendly sociability, and deep compassion. He views human desire and religious faith with cynical detachment, believing neither heaven nor hell exists. Instead, he sincerely convinces himself that devouring humans—especially women—grants them eternal life inside his body, freeing them from earthly suffering. In combat, he remains completely calm, frequently provoking opponents with disarming nonchalance.

Abilities

Douma ranks among the strongest demons, possessing exceptionally swift movement, precise visual observation, rapid physical regeneration, and an uncanny ability to quickly break down and adapt to poisons. His twin golden fans slice effortlessly through flesh. Through his Blood Demon Art, he manipulates absolute zero temperatures, generating frozen blood particles. Inhaling his mist causes rapid lung tissue necrosis, directly neutralizing Total Concentration Breathing. His technique repertoire includes fine freezing mist, razor-sharp lotus blossoms, binding ice vines, frost-exhaling priestess statues, and a giant ice Buddha. Furthermore, his technique Crystalline Children creates miniature ice clones capable of executing all his techniques at full power while relaying real-time battlefield data back to him.

Background

Born with rare rainbow eyes, Douma was venerated from childhood as a divine figure by his parents, who founded the Eternal Paradise Cult. Unmoved even when his mother murdered his father and ended her own life, Douma grew up completely devoid of emotion. At age twenty, he met Kibutsuji Muzan and willingly became a demon. While retaining his role as cult leader, he ascended the demon hierarchy, originally turning Gyutaro and Daki into demons as Upper Rank Six. He later took in Kotoha Hashibira and her baby Inosuke, though he eventually killed Kotoha when she discovered his true nature. Prior to the final arc, he mortally wounded Kanae Kocho. During the Infinity Castle battle, he devoured Shinobu Kocho; however, her body had been saturated with wisteria poison, severely weakening him and allowing Kanao Tsuyuri and Inosuke Hashibira to decapitate him.

Relationships

Douma reveres Kibutsuji Muzan as a divine being, though Muzan personally disdains him for his lack of intense drive or attachment. He persistently refers to Upper Rank Three Akaza as his close friend, despite Akaza's open hatred and violent outbursts toward him. As Upper Rank Six, Douma saved Gyutaro and Daki by converting them into demons. He killed Flower Hashira Kanae Kocho and later consumed her younger sister, Insect Hashira Shinobu Kocho. Upon his death, experiencing romance for the first time, Douma invited Shinobu's soul to accompany him to hell, only to be coldly turned down. He had previously harbored a mild fondness for Inosuke's mother, Kotoha Hashibira, though he ultimately killed her when she witnessed him eating a cult follower.

Trivia

Unable to eat or drink human food after becoming a demon, Douma satisfies his former love for alcohol by taking sake baths and frequently smokes a water pipe. He deliberately targets young women as his primary prey, believing female flesh provides vastly superior nourishment for increasing demon strength. His choice of dual golden fans used to strike down the butterfly-themed Kocho sisters is believed to reference Tousenkyo, a traditional Japanese parlor game where players throw fans at a butterfly-shaped target.
