Overview
Gyuutarou is a major antagonist in the "Entertainment District Arc" of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. As a member of the Twelve Kizuki under Muzan Kibutsuji, he holds the true position of Upper Rank Six alongside his younger sister, Daki. He usually remains fused inside Daki's body, emerging only when she faces overwhelming danger. Stemming from a childhood of extreme poverty and abuse in the lowest strata of Yoshiwara, he harbors immense resentment toward anyone blessed with beauty or good fortune. Utilizing poisoned blood-formed sickles and formidable battle intellect, he has slain numerous Hashira over more than a century.
Appearance
Gyuutarou has a tall yet heavily stooped posture, featuring an unnaturally emaciated waist with visible pelvic bones contrasted by a heavily muscular chest and arms. His pale skin and face are covered in dark splotches, accompanied by a flattened nose, sharp teeth, and dark eye circles. His messy short hair is tied at the top in a two-tone gradient of black above and neon green below. He has bloodshot green eyes with yellow sclera; his right eye displays the kanji for "Upper Rank" while his left reads "Six." He goes bare-chested, wearing wraps around his arms, bandage-like trousers, and no shoes, sporting black claws and wielding twin sickles.
Personality
Hardened by a traumatic upbringing in extreme poverty, Gyuutarou possesses an intensely envious, vengeful, and sadistic demeanor. Guided by a bitter philosophy of collecting debts from the fortunate and inflicting his past suffering onto others, he harbors deep malice toward anyone blessed with wealth, beauty, or happiness. When agitated or consumed by envy, he compulsively scratches his own skin until he bleeds. He speaks with a drawn-out, raspy cadence. Despite his cruelty, he demonstrates unconditional affection for his sister Daki, violently punishing anyone who harms her. In battle, he remains surprisingly pragmatic, carefully analyzing his opponents' strengths and tactics.
Abilities
Gyuutarou functions as a single entity with Daki; neither can be killed unless both are decapitated simultaneously. He possesses rapid regeneration, able to quickly neutralize potent toxins. By transferring his left eye to Daki's forehead, he shares vision to manipulate her remotely and orchestrate coordinated attacks. His twin sickles and all associated techniques carry a fast-acting, lethal poison. His Blood Demon Arts include "Flying Blood Sickles," which fires homing razor blades of blood; "Bakko Chouryoud," an omnidirectional defensive barrier of blood slashes; and "Enzan Senkai: Tobichigama," which releases destructive spiral blades from his arms. Upon decapitation, his body triggers a massive, explosive surge of these slashes.
Background
Born in the impoverished Rashomon Riverbank of Yoshiwara, Gyuutarou survived extreme neglect, congenital syphilis, and physical abuse. After his beautiful younger sister Ume was born, he found purpose in protecting her, working as a fierce debt collector to sustain them. When Ume was thirteen, she blinded a samurai who insulted her brother, prompting the samurai and the brothel's manager to burn her alive. Consumed by rage, Gyuutarou killed both attackers but fell critically wounded. As the siblings lay dying in the snow, the demon Douma transformed them into demons. Rising to Upper Rank Six, they eventually battled the Demon Slayer Corps in Yoshiwara, where Gyuutarou was decapitated by Tanjiro Kamado and Tengen Uzui. Before dissolving, he reconciled with his sister as they entered the afterlife together.
Relationships
Gyuutarou's deepest bond is with his younger sister Daki (originally named Ume), whom he treasures above all else and protects unconditionally. His master, Muzan Kibutsuji, favored Gyuutarou for his greed and harsh past, though Muzan ultimately blamed his defeat on his lingering human attachment to his sister. He was turned into a demon by Douma, inheriting the Upper Rank Six position from him. During the battle in Yoshiwara, he harbored intense jealousy toward Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui due to Tengen's attractive appearance and wives, while acknowledging his skill. Though hostile toward Tanjiro Kamado, Tanjiro's words after their defeat reminded Gyuutarou of his genuine love for his sister, prompting their final reconciliation.
Trivia
His name, "Gyuutarou," derives from "Gyuufu," a term for lower-level male laborers in Yoshiwara brothels responsible for soliciting customers and collecting debts. Having been given no proper name by his parents, his job title effectively served as his name. In official guidebooks and the Kimetsu Academy spin-off, his full surname is revealed as Shabana, making his full name Shabana Gyuutarou. In the second official character popularity poll, he ranked 42nd with 158 votes. In Kimetsu Academy, he is depicted as a notorious high school delinquent alongside his sister.
