Overview

Hantengu is a major antagonist in the manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Serving directly under Muzan Kibutsuji, he holds the prestigious position of Upper Rank Four within the Twelve Kizuki. Appearing primarily as a cowardly, frail elderly man who constantly trembles in fear, he possesses an extreme victim complex and delusional self-justification. In battle, he functions as a split demon who creates powerful clones embodied by his distinct emotions to overwhelm his opponents.

Appearance

In his base form, he appears as a small, hunchbacked old man with brown skin, pointy ears, long sharp fingernails, two horns, and a massive bump on his forehead. He wears a flowing kimono and has bright red eyes that usually roll back, making his rank number difficult to read. His various emotional clones take the forms of younger men sharing the same brown skin, horns, pointy ears, and long nails, along with cracked purple markings beneath their eyes. Each clone is distinguished by a specific kanji representing its emotion written on its tongue or equipment, as well as distinct eye colors, outfits, and weaponry.

Personality

Hantengu is exceedingly cowardly and consumed by an intense victim complex, constantly weeping and trembling in panic. Beneath his weak front lies a pathological liar who takes no responsibility for his past crimes or murders. He genuinely perceives himself as an innocent, vulnerable sufferer being victimized by others. This inverted morality and refusal to acknowledge his own misdeeds directly shape the personalities of his clones, who hypocritically condemn their attackers as evil for harming their feeble true self.

Abilities

His Blood Demon Art allows him to split into multiple distinct, younger clones based on his emotions when put in danger, such as Sekido (lightning strikes), Karaku (powerful gales), Urogi (flight and sonic waves), and Aizetsu (spear techniques). Decapitating these clones only causes them to split further or regenerate without dying. When pushed into extreme danger, Sekido absorbs the other three to become Zohakuten, a powerful form equipped with thunder drums who commands massive wooden dragons and amplified versions of all clone powers. The true body, Obie, is mouse-sized with an exceptionally durable neck, adept at fleeing, while Urami serves as a giant physical shell to conceal the real body inside its heart.

Background

During his human life, he was a chronic thief and murderer who constantly changed his name to evade justice. After robbing a benefactor of the blind and murdering a witness to cover his crime, he was caught and sentenced to execution by a local magistrate. On the eve of his beheading, Muzan Kibutsuji gave him demon blood, allowing him to escape and murder the magistrate. As Upper Rank Four of the Twelve Kizuki, he served Muzan for over a century until he invaded the Swordsmith Village alongside Gyokko, where he was ultimately slain by Tanjiro Kamado after a desperate battle.

Relationships

He shows total obedience and loyalty to Muzan Kibutsuji, considering him the only authority entitled to command him. In the Swordsmith Village, he fought against Tanjiro Kamado, Nezuko Kamado, Genya Shinazugawa, and the Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji. Through his emotional manifestations, particularly Zohakuten, he viewed these Demon Slayers as cruel bullies persecuting a helpless victim.

Trivia

Due to a lifetime of deceptive aliases to evade arrest as a human, he completely forgot his own original birth name. Muzan Kibutsuji evaluated his personality as generally mediocre and occasionally annoying, though within tolerable limits. The wooden dragons generated by his Blood Demon Art were later consumed by Genya Shinazugawa, enabling Genya to utilize those abilities in subsequent battles.
