Overview

Aura, also known as "Aura the Guillotine," is a character from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. She is a powerful demon who serves as one of the Seven Sages of Destruction under the Demon King. Having honed her mana for over 500 years, she commands a group of subordinate demons known as the Executioners. After suffering a major defeat against Himmel the Hero's party decades in the past, she went into hiding to restore her strength, later resuming her attack on the Northern Kingdoms after Himmel's death.

Appearance

Aura is a female demon with prominent demon horns and purple hair styled into low braided pigtails with triangular bangs. Her eyes are depicted as purple or red. She wears a bare-shoulder outfit paired with a skirt, long black elbow-length gloves, and jewelry, completed with over-the-knee boots.

Personality

Aura is extremely arrogant, cruel, and self-assured, firmly adhering to the demonic belief that magical power dictates absolute authority. Entirely lacking in human empathy, she cannot comprehend emotional bonds or the significance of deceased loved ones. While she displays pragmatic caution and self-preservation when facing threats, her supreme confidence in her accumulated mana causes her to act condescendingly toward those she deems weaker.

Abilities

Aura uses Subjugation Magic (Azerilyse) via a magical artifact known as the Scales of Obedience. By placing her soul's mana against her opponent's on the balance, the party with the larger current mana pool gains absolute, semi-permanent control over the loser's body. To prevent victims from resisting via willpower, she decapitates them, turning their corpses into an army of headless puppets. She also possesses undisclosed offensive magic. However, the scale is completely impartial: if her opponent's mana surpasses her own, Aura herself falls under the control of the target.

Background

Active as one of the Seven Sages of Destruction for over 500 years, Aura built a massive undead army out of decapitated victims. Around 80 years ago, she engaged Himmel's party in battle, losing most of her forces and sustaining critical injuries that required nearly 50 years to heal. Remaining inactive until Himmel's death, she rebuilt her forces and launched a fresh invasion of the Granat domain 28 years after the Hero's passing. She dispatched her Executioners under the guise of peace envoys to disarm the domain's barrier, but Frieren's group eliminated them. Confronting Frieren directly, Aura attempted to use her balance magic, unaware that Frieren had been suppressing her immense mana pool for centuries. Outmatched in mana, Aura was subjugated by her own spell and forced to end her life by severing her own head with her sword.

Relationships

Aura commanded three direct subordinates known as the Executioners: Lugner, Linie, and Draht. She maintained a bitter hostility toward Himmel the Hero and his party, who originally defeated her army. Her primary adversary became Frieren, whom Aura underestimated during their final encounter, ultimately leading to Aura's defeat and self-execution under Frieren's command.

Trivia

Her name originates from the German word for "aura" or "halo." In the animated adaptation, the visual sequence of her self-decapitation inspired fan commentary due to her posture resembling someone playing a violin. Despite her early narrative demise, she proved exceptionally popular in official character polls, securing second place overall in the second official popularity poll conducted after the anime broadcast.
