Overview
Denken is a supporting character in the manga series Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, created by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe. He is a seasoned court mage of the Northern Empire who successfully navigated fierce political power struggles after rising from the military ranks. Initially appearing as a Second-Class Mage, he later earns the title of First-Class Mage. Despite his high political standing and formidable magical authority, he is defined by his pragmatic survival instincts, tactical mind, and deep humanity.
Appearance
Denken is an elderly man with brown hair styled in a back-swept manner, featuring a prominent high forehead with dangling side strands. He has thick eyebrows, a full mustache and beard, and wears a monocle over one eye. His outfit consists of a long black robe with a white collar, secured at the waist with a belt, alongside mid-calf boots. He carries a magic staff as his standard equipment.
Personality
True to his analytical nature, Denken is a calm and deeply thoughtful strategist. Having survived ruthless court intrigues, he places self-preservation above pride, living by the philosophy of struggling fiercely until the very end. He is exceptionally pragmatic, willing to resort to physical brawling if his mana runs dry. Although he can present himself as a shrewd politician, he is fundamentally compassionate and caring, often guiding younger mages and treating them with grandfatherly warmth and generosity.
Abilities
Denken is a highly accomplished sorcerer who utilizes compressed basic offensive magic as a lethal blow, alongside localized defensive magic and flight magic. His offensive arsenal includes Catastravia, which fires a rapid sequence of light beams, and a combined combo of Waldgose (tornado generation) and Dhaosdolk (converting wind into infernal flames). He also possesses a high-tier Curse Reflection magic learned from Serie, and can seamlessly transition to physical hand-to-hand combat when his magic power is completely spent.
Background
Orphaned as a child when his parents were slain by demons, Denken was taken in by his relative, the nobleman Glück. He learned magic from the great demon Macht of El Dorado while growing up alongside Glück's daughter, Lektüre. After gaining military honors in the imperial army, he married Lektüre, though she tragically passed away young due to poor health. Rising to become a prominent court mage, he eventually entered the First-Class Mage Exam to secure access to his hometown of Weise—which had been turned to gold by Macht and declared a forbidden zone—so he could visit his wife's grave. Upon passing, he returned to Weise and defeated Macht with the aid of Frieren's party.
Relationships
Denken remains completely devoted to his late wife, Lektüre, and holds her father, Glück, in high esteem as both a benefactor and father-in-law. He forms a close, grandfatherly bond with his exam teammates Richter and Laufen. He maintains a long-standing friendship with the First-Class Mage Lernen dating back to their military service. His connection to Macht of El Dorado is complex, bound by a shared history as master and pupil alongside a tragic rivalry. He also respects and appreciates Frieren for her help during the exam and the liberation of Weise.
Trivia
His name "Denken" is derived from the German verb meaning "to think." Despite his initial impression as a calculated politician, his willingness to strip off his outer coat and engage in a desperate fistfight during the exam made him extraordinarily popular among readers as a surprisingly physical mage. While he adopts the formal elderly first-person pronoun washi to maintain his courtly prestige, his natural spoken first-person pronoun is ore.
