Overview

Richter is a Second-Class Mage introduced in the series Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. Operating a magic shop in the city of Äußerst, he enters the First-Class Mage Exam, where he joins Party 13 alongside Denken and Laufen. Known for his practical mindset and deep understanding of magic, he plays a prominent role during the exam arc.

Appearance

Richter is a middle-aged man with wavy brown hair, brown eyes featuring sanpaku eyes, and a goatee. He is neatly dressed in a white collared shirt beneath a dark jacket and vest, complemented by a tie, a belt, and leather shoes.

Personality

Richter comes across as cynical, ambitious, and highly realistic. Although he maintains a harsh and pragmatic approach toward achieving his goals, he is fundamentally rational and possesses common sense. Older mage Denken remarks that Richter resembles his younger self. Despite his blunt behavior, he is reluctant to abandon others, though he feels genuinely hurt when younger mages blatantly refer to him as an old man.

Abilities

Richter specializes in earth-manipulation magic known as Bargland, which allows him to control mass amounts of soil and terrain by touching the ground directly without needing a staff. In addition to his combat capabilities and vast knowledge of magical theory, he possesses exceptional restoration magic that can seamlessly repair broken magical tools and staves.

Background

Having lived in Äußerst since childhood, Richter grew up familiar with the local community before opening his own magic shop, earning respect for his repair work. Seeking the privileges associated with higher rank, he takes the First-Class Mage Exam. After advancing through the first stage in a group with Denken and Laufen, he reaches the second stage, where he is forced to forfeit after being severely injured by a clone of Sense. Returning to his trade, he later repairs Fern's damaged staff when Frieren visits his shop.

Relationships

During the exam, he forms an unexpected bond with his teammates Denken and Laufen, continuing to share meals with them even after the test concludes. He engages in intense combat against Lawine and Kanne during the first stage. While initially dismissive of Frieren when she brings in a damaged item, he recognizes the immense care given to Fern's staff and performs the repairs with dedication.

Trivia

His name, Richter, is derived from the German word for judge or magistrate, while also referencing the Richter scale used to measure earthquake intensity, fitting his earth-manipulation magic. He has had a fond liking for sweets since childhood.
