Overview
Fern is a central protagonist in 'Sousou no Frieren', traveling alongside the elf mage Frieren as her apprentice. Raised as a war orphan by the priest Heiter, she acquired exceptional magical talent before embarking on a prolonged journey across the continent. Within the party, she acts as a practical, maternal caretaker who manages daily chores and keeps her naturally lax master in check. Though soft-spoken and polite in demeanor, she possesses a sharp tongue and a steady, practical approach to both everyday life and combat.
Appearance
Fern is a young woman with deep purple eyes and waist-length, straight purple hair featuring neatly trimmed bangs and longer strands framing her chest. She wears her hair partially pinned with a butterfly-shaped ornament and wears a decorative lotus bracelet on her left wrist. Her standard attire consists of a long, buttoned white dress with a frilled collar, worn underneath a heavy, hooded black coat lined in white. She wears dark long boots and carries a wooden casting staff. Her physical build is tall and curvy. In cold climates, she changes into a long-sleeved black dress paired with a thick white winter coat and a braided purple scarf.
Personality
Fern is highly disciplined, solemn, and composed, addressing everyone with formal honorifics while maintaining a subtly acerbic tone. She assumes a maternal, strict attitude toward her companions, frequently keeping their daily habits in order and scolding them when necessary. Though she rarely displays strong emotions openly, she has a pronounced habit of pouting silently whenever annoyed or jealous. Beneath her quiet exterior lies a surprisingly stubborn and reactive nature; she can be quick to resort to force if her allies are threatened. Influenced by her upbringing, she also holds surprisingly tolerant views regarding alcoholic beverages.
Abilities
Fern is a remarkably gifted mage who excels at concealing her magical presence and suppressing her aura to evade detection. Her combat style centers almost exclusively on fundamental spells, relying on basic offensive magic and physical defense magic. What renders her formidable is her extraordinary casting speed—surpassing even experienced mages—and her relentless rapid-fire attacks powered by immense mana reserves. She is capable of sniping enemies from extreme distances while using flight magic. While she has mastered numerous utility spells for daily survival, she remains a pure long-range caster vulnerable in physical melee combat.
Background
Having lost her parents during war in the southern countries, Fern was rescued from suicide by Heiter, a retired priest of the hero party. To repay his kindness by becoming self-sufficient, she began studying magic under his care. She later met the elf mage Frieren, who took her in as a student and accelerated her training. Following Heiter's passing, Fern joined Frieren on her journey across the lands, confronting demonic threats and honing her battle experience until officially achieving high-tier qualification as an accomplished young mage.
Relationships
Fern holds profound gratitude toward her guardian, Heiter, whose lessons and habits shaped her worldview. With her master Frieren, she shares a deep bond of mutual respect, though Fern effectively acts as a protective caretaker who manages Frieren's day-to-day life. She maintains a complex relationship with the warrior Stark; despite frequently chastising him and treating him harshly, she cares for him deeply and develops strong romantic feelings over time. The priest Sein often serves as a mediator who lightheartedly pushes the two to acknowledge their attachment.
Trivia
Her name 'Fern' is derived from the German word meaning 'distant' or 'far away'. She takes great joy in carefully maintaining her personal belongings, frequently cleaning and polishing the staff, hair ornament, and bracelet gifted to her by her loved ones. When dressing up in formal wear, she insists on tightening her corset as strictly as possible, even if it hinders movement.
