Overview
Heiter is a major character in the manga and anime series Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. He served as the priest within the legendary Hero Party that successfully defeated the Demon King alongside Hero Himmel, Warrior Eisen, and Mage Frieren. A childhood friend of Himmel, he later rose to the prestigious position of bishop in the Holy City following their decade-long journey.
Appearance
Heiter is a man with short green or silver hair styled in a slicked-back look, revealing a prominent forehead with framing bangs along the sides of his face. He has brown eyes and wears eyeglasses. His attire consists of cleric robes complemented by a cloak, a waist belt, and a walking staff.
Personality
Heiter is exceptionally fond of alcohol, often dismissing his heavy drinking and hangovers with bright humor. He has a cheerful yet snarky temperament, prone to crying easily when moved and occasionally teasing his allies. Though he originally preferred a quiet, trouble-free life, he grew deeply compassionate under Himmel's influence. He is also a devoutly faithful individual who genuinely honors the Goddess.
Abilities
Heiter is a prodigy among priests, possessing an enormous mana reserve that is five times greater than Frieren's suppressed state. Blessed with extraordinary divine protection, he commands numerous Goddess Magic spells recorded in the holy scriptures. His repertoire includes support spells that allow allies to survive without food, water, or air for two months, stealth magic to hide mana footprints, and specialized magic capable of sending individuals forward in time.
Background
Orphaned at a young age, Heiter grew up alongside Himmel. Inspired by Himmel's resolve to become a true hero, he joined the decade-long crusade against the Demon King. In the era of peace that followed, he served as a bishop before retiring to the countryside. There, he took in a young war orphan named Fern as his adopted daughter. Realizing his life was nearing its end, he cleverly delayed Frieren with a fake grimoire research task to buy time for Fern's training, successfully entrusting her future to Frieren before passing away peacefully.
Relationships
Himmel was Heiter's childhood friend whose heroic ideals deeply shaped his life. He shared a profound bond of trust with his fellow party members, Frieren and Eisen. In his later years, he adopted Fern and raised her with great devotion, eventually entrusting her to Frieren as an apprentice. He also interacted with Sein's older brother during his time visiting rural villages on behalf of the church.
Trivia
Heiter's name is derived from the German word 'heiter', which translates to 'cheerful' or 'merry'. Even after giving up alcohol in his old age to care for Fern, he still taught her his favorite phrase that alcohol is the ultimate medicine.
