Overview

A prominent character in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Ubel is a human mage who participates in the First-Class Mage Exam held in the magical city of Oisast. Initially holding the rank of Third-Class Mage, she possesses extraordinary combat intuition and an unconventional approach to magic that sets her apart from traditional spellcasters. Regarded by those around her as a volatile problem child, she successfully achieves the status of First-Class Mage and subsequently carries out specialized duties under the Continental Magic Association.

Appearance

Ubel features long green hair tied into a side ponytail with M-shaped frontal bangs. She has distinctive purple eyes with a sharp, half-lidded sanpaku gaze. Her outfit consists of a revealing sleeveless black dress with a pleated skirt, exposing her shoulders and underarms. Her attire is detailed with a collar band, armlets, a thigh ring, and black gloves, completed with long boots.

Personality

Ubel exhibits a playful, provocative, and chaotic demeanor, earning a reputation as a dangerous trouble child. While she does not necessarily kill for pleasure, she harbors no psychological aversion to taking lives when she deems it appropriate. She naturally leans on sensory intuition rather than intellectual reasoning, yet maintains extraordinary mental fortitude. Despite her threatening presence, she occasionally reveals a surprisingly flustered and maidenlike side when caught off guard by unexpected situations.

Abilities

Ubel operates magic through raw intuition rather than logical comprehension. Her unique aptitude allows her to copy and replicate another person's spell once she deeply empathizes with their character and mindset. Her signature spell, Reelseiden, delivers invisible slashing attacks within a five-meter radius, effortlessly severing anything she subjectively visualizes as cuttable—such as fabric, rope, or hair—regardless of powerful protective wards. Conversely, it cannot cut objects she perceives as uncuttable, including standard defensive shields. Through empathizing with Wirbel, she also acquired Solganir, a spell that paralyzes anyone fully within her sight.

Background

During her childhood, Ubel spent extensive time watching her older sister perform seamstress work, which intuitively ingrained in her the concept of cutting fabric and laid the foundation for her cleavage magic. During a prior Second-Class Mage exam, she accidentally killed the First-Class examiner Burg with her cutting spell, leading to her immediate disqualification. Years later, she traveled to Oisast for the First-Class Mage Exam, meeting the monk Craft along the way. After passing all stages of the exam, she officially attained the rank of First-Class Mage and was assigned to undercover security and intelligence operations within the Empire.

Relationships

Ubel forms a notable dynamic with Land, whom she nicknames "Megane-kun"; intrigued by his cloning spell, she persistently sticks by his side during exams and subsequent Imperial missions. She co-operated with Fern during the initial exam phase. Through a shared understanding of Wirbel's perspective on killing, she successfully copied his binding spell. Her reputation precedes her due to accidentally slaying the examiner Burg, an incident that earned her intense scrutiny from the examiner Sense. Serie passed her instantly during the final interview and later assigned her field operations, while the monk Craft accurately discerned her dangerous gaze upon their first meeting.

Trivia

Her name "Übel" derives from the German word for "evil", "bad", or "nasty". In an official comedic mini-animation short, her attempt at cooking resulted in a censored, mosaic-covered dish because her skills are entirely limited to slicing things rather than actual culinary preparation.
