Overview

Macht of the Golden Land is a character from the manga series Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe's Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. He is an archdemon and the last surviving member of the Seven Sages of Destruction, the elite executives serving under the Demon King, recognized by both allies and enemies as the strongest among them. Sealed inside a massive barrier maintained by the Continental Magic Association, he was confined within the fortified city of Weise, which he turned to gold. Uniquely among demons, Macht sought to understand human emotions like malice and guilt to achieve coexistence.

Appearance

Macht is a tall demon with wine-red or purple hair slicked back, featuring slightly wavy ends. Pair of large, angled horns grow from his temples, and he has pointy ears. He wears a dark green military-style suit decorated with gold tassels, shoulder sashes, long sleeves, gloves, and boots. Over his left shoulder, he drapes a large, fluffy cloak. He has sharp eyes—variously depicted with blue, green, red, or purple irises—and is typically expressionless.

Personality

Macht disdains unnecessary conflict and holds little loyalty toward the Demon King or demonkind's goals. Driven by a desire to understand concepts foreign to demons, such as malice and guilt, he genuinely seeks coexistence with humanity. Although polite, talkative, and capable of forming complex bonds—such as his pragmatic friendship with Glück—his psychological nature remains fundamentally alien. He casually slaughters populations and destroys cities in an attempt to trigger emotional comprehension.

Abilities

Macht masters "Diagoldze," a specialized magic classified as an unblockable and incurable curse that turns anything into indestructible gold at will with no pre-conditions. He can manipulate the created gold, shaping his cloak into indestructible swords, spears, or shields, or unleashing massive storms of razor-sharp gold fragments. He can undo the gold transformation on inorganic matter and himself, but cannot restore humans. Additionally, he can cast human magic, including ordinary offensive and defensive spells.

Background

Over six hundred years ago, Macht defeated Frieren and her party in battle. Centuries later, an encounter with a priest sparked his curiosity about human emotions. Decades before the main events, he struck a bargain with Lord Glück of Weise, serving as his house mage and political enforcer while mentoring young Denken. Eventually, believing that destroying what he cherished would grant him insight into guilt, he turned all of Weise into gold. Sealed inside a barrier for decades, he was eventually confronted and killed by Denken.

Relationships

Macht formed a unique bond with Lord Glück, acting as his servant, assassin, and confidant. He served as the magic instructor to Denken, who later fought him as his former master. Solitär was his long-time acquaintance among demons, sharing an interest in human research. He worked alongside fellow Seven Sages of Destruction such as Aura the Guillotine and Grausam the Miraculous, as well as Schlacht the Omniscient and Qual. He was an ancient rival to Frieren and was imprisoned by Serie.

Trivia

His name, "Macht," is derived from the German word for "power" or "authority."
