Overview

A character from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Edel is a Second-Class Mage affiliated with the Continental Magic Association who takes the First-Class Mage Exam in Äußerst. Hailing from a distinguished lineage renowned for mind-affecting magic, she lacks direct offensive combat capabilities. However, she possesses deep theoretical knowledge and a mastery of mental magic that surpasses even that of First-Class Mages.

Appearance

Edel is a petite young woman with a short mushroom-cut hairstyle that covers her ears, featuring center-parted bangs and upturned golden eyes. She wears a dress with short puffy sleeves paired with over-the-knee boots, giving her a diminutive and youthful appearance.

Personality

Despite her youthful appearance, Edel speaks in an archaic tone reminiscent of an elderly person and uses the aged first-person pronoun washi. She is naturally low-energy, dislikes hassle, and prefers to avoid work, yet she faithfully fulfills any task she accepts. She loves sweets, though financial hardship often restricts her diet. Beneath her passive demeanor lies sharp analytical insight and unwavering courage when confronting perilous situations.

Abilities

Edel specializes in mental control magic, forcing targets with a mind to obey her directives via eye contact, though stronger opponents place greater limitations on its efficacy. She also commands memory transfer magic, allowing her to extract and share memories through physical contact. Although species differences normally prevent humans from accessing a demon's mind, she successfully read roughly a century of memories from the demon Macht at severe physical cost. While devoid of direct combat power, her mastery over mental magic exceeds that of First-Class Mages.

Background

During the First-Class Mage Exam, Edel teamed up with Blei and Dunste for the first stage, successfully capturing a Stille bird by minimizing their magic output. In the second stage inside a dungeon, she boldly attempted to test her mental magic on a clone of the examiner Sense, but suffered a severe abdominal wound and was forced to withdraw. Later, she accepted a personal commission from Lernen for three loaves of bread to investigate the Golden Land of Weise. Confronted by the demon Macht, she risked her life to make physical contact and extract a century of his memories, which were then passed to Denken.

Relationships

Edel formed a team with Blei and Dunste during the first phase of the mage exam, working closely with them to survive the trial. She expressed admiration for Richter's escape golem after her early withdrawal. In the streets of Äußerst, Methode took a liking to her small, cute appearance and gave her headpats. Lernen later hired her for a dangerous reconnaissance mission in Weise, and the memories she retrieved ultimately aided Denken in his efforts regarding the Golden Land.

Trivia

Her name Edel is derived from the German word meaning noble. Despite possessing extraordinary talent in mental magic that commands respect, she is consistently portrayed as impoverished, accepting perilous assignments for modest rewards such as simple loaves of bread.
