Serie

Overview

Serie is a major character in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. She is an ancient elven Great Mage from the Mythical Era who founded and leads the Continental Magic Association. Celebrated as a living grimoire possessing mastery over virtually all human magic throughout history, she is regarded as the closest being to the omnipotent Goddess. She served as the teacher of the legendary mage Flamme, making her the grandmaster of the protagonist Frieren.

Appearance

Serie is a female elf with long blonde hair adorned with sidelocks and hair tubes, slanted gold eyes, and pointed ears. Her attire includes an off-the-shoulder dress paired with short shorts, a belt, and a cloak, complemented by jewelry such as a necklace, earrings, bracelets, and anklets, while consistently walking barefoot.

Personality

Haughty and combative, Serie believes that intense ambition and personal ego are essential driving forces for mastering magic. She views magic primarily as a weapon for combat that belongs exclusively to the talented, often associating peace with stagnation. Despite claiming to train disciples purely on a whim, she holds genuine affection for them, remembering each student's personality and favorite spell. She also possesses remarkable intuition and is willing to admit mistakes when proven wrong.

Abilities

Serie wields an immense capacity of mana that, even while suppressed, equals Frieren's unsuppressed output. Her mana concealment is virtually flawless, hiding subtle fluctuations from nearly everyone, and her sensory reach can span an entire capital city. She commands ancient spells such as Mistilziela, which reflects recognized curses; Fearvelia, which transfers her own mastered spells to others; and dream-based precognition to observe potential futures. Her vast arsenal also encompasses barrier magic, offensive and defensive spells, flight, weather manipulation, and legendary household utility spells.

Background

Having survived since the Mythical Era, Serie took in the young Flamme long ago and taught her magic. Although she tore up Flamme's final request to spread magic to all humanity after her death, she later anticipated the arrival of a human era and founded the Continental Magic Association roughly fifty years before the present timeline. She enticed powerful mages by promising them a spell of their choice upon reaching First-Class status. When Macht of El Dorado transformed Weiss into gold, Serie directly intervened to negate his magic and assist in sealing him. In later years, she personally conducted the final stage of the First-Class Mage exam.

Relationships

She shared a bond akin to family with her first pupil, Flamme, despite their opposing philosophies regarding magic. Toward Flamme's apprentice Frieren, she maintains a stern demeanor over her lack of ambition, yet acknowledges her accomplishments. She was immensely impressed by Frieren's pupil Fern upon noticing her keen mana perception, offering to take her as a student. She previously defeated Macht of the Seven Sages of Destruction by countering his gold transmutations, and she maintains complex, affectionate mentor relationships with her Association mages such as Lernen, Denken, and Sense.

Trivia

Her name, Serie, originates from the German word meaning 'series.' Her practice of constantly suppressing her mana was passed down through her lineage to Flamme and Frieren. Because mages who wield future-sight magic tend to die young, Serie handed out most of her foresight spells to disciples who requested privileges, leaving herself with only the least practical dream-precognition spell.
