Overview

Lernen is a character from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. He is an elderly human magic-user who achieved the distinction of becoming the very first First-Class Mage in the Continental Magic Association. Serving as the direct apprentice and personal aide to the great mage Serie, he holds one of the highest positions of authority within the organization. Born into nobility, he possesses extraordinary magical talent despite his lack of social adeptness.

Appearance

Lernen is an elderly man with blue eyes and silver hair styled in a slicked-back fashion with framing bangs. He has a full mustache and beard. His attire features a cloak worn over coat-like garments fitted with a necktie and a belt, completed with mid-calf boots. He carries a long magic staff as his primary equipment.

Personality

Lernen is fundamentally rational, humble, and polite, yet he struggles immensely with emotional expression and interpersonal communication. Since his youth, his social awkwardness has sometimes pushed him toward extreme choices. He feels absolute devotion and deep reverence for his master, Serie, which occasionally drives him to desperate acts out of fear of being forgotten due to a lack of historical achievements in a peaceful era. Beneath his stoic demeanor lies a strong sense of honor and loyalty to his friends.

Abilities

Lernen specializes in golem magic, utilizing compact golems stored inside small glass bottles that activate upon being shattered. His creations include escape golems capable of self-regeneration and using divine recovery magic, as well as combat golems with physical strength matching skilled warriors. He possesses remarkable mana detection, enabling him to spot minute fluctuations even in individuals who suppress their mana. In battle, he can discharge a destructive black beam spell capable of breaking through powerful defensive barriers.

Background

Born into a noble family, Lernen originally served in the imperial court alongside Denken. However, his poor communication skills led to political missteps and banishment from the palace. He subsequently joined Serie's newly established Continental Magic Association, becoming its first First-Class Mage and serving her for over fifty years. When the city of Weise was turned to gold by Macht, Lernen intervened to suggest sealing the demon rather than killing him, aiming to keep a future restoration possible. Later, as an exam proctor, he recognized Frieren's concealed power and confronted her to establish a historical legacy, though Frieren ultimately persuaded him to stand down. He subsequently risked his life to extract Macht's memories to assist Denken.

Relationships

Lernen holds absolute loyalty and reverent affection for his master, Serie, while harboring a deep fear of being forgotten by her. He shares a lifelong friendship with Denken dating back to their court service, feeling immensely indebted to him for standing by him during his downfall. His encounter with Frieren began when he attacked her to secure a historical reputation, though Frieren shifted his perspective by revealing Serie's memory of all her apprentices. During his memory-retrieval operation in the Golden Land, he partnered with Edel.

Trivia

His name "Lernen" is derived from the German verb meaning "to learn." Within the narrative, he is characterized as a supreme mage whose formidable combat and research talent contrasts sharply with his total lack of political and social cunning. He stands as one of the oldest active human mages within the association.
