Overview
Draht is an antagonist in the manga and anime series Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. He is a demon serving as one of the Executioners under Aura the Guillotine, a powerful executive of the Demon King's forces known as one of the Seven Sages of Destruction. Alongside his fellow executioners Lügner and Linie, he infiltrates the territory of Count Granat under the pretense of peace negotiations to weaken the town's protective barrier. Youthful and eager to prove his merit, he acts as an early enemy who clashes with Frieren.
Appearance
Draht has short demon horns curving outward from his head and purple eyes. His hair is styled in a mushroom cut with side-swept bangs covering one eye and ear, depicted as either green or blonde. He wears a white button-down dress shirt featuring central ruffles and a black-and-white striped bow tie at the neck. The shirt features loose sleeves tapered into long cuffs, paired with dark dress pants held up by black suspenders.
Personality
Draht is young for a demon, rendering him hot-headed, arrogant, and excessively proud of his magical capability. Due to a profound lack of actual combat experience, he lacks the discernment to gauge his opponents' true power. Driven by a desire for prestige, he tends to act independently without consulting his superiors. He views humans with cruel condescension, yet when confronted by an overwhelming force that surpasses his expectations, he quickly loses his composure and desperately begs for his life.
Abilities
Draht employs a specialized magic that manifests highly dense threads of mana from his fingertips. Known as magic wires, these lines possess immense hardness and cutting power, easily capable of severing human flesh and decapitating victims. The strength of the threads is high enough that Frieren herself notes the difficulty of directly slicing through the wire itself. However, his technique depends on the use of his hands, leaving him helpless if his arms are severed.
Background
Decades after the Demon King's defeat, Draht accompanied Lügner and Linie to Count Granat's domain disguised as envoys to dismantle the city's magical barrier. When Frieren arrived and saw through their peaceful facade, she was arrested. Viewing her as a dangerous element, Draht took it upon himself to infiltrate the prison, murder the guard, and attempt to assassinate Frieren in her cell. Trapping her with his magic wires, he prematurely celebrated victory, only for Frieren to effortlessly sever both his hands and eliminate him before he could finish pleading for time. His rash action ultimately exposed the demons' true intentions.
Relationships
Draht serves as an Executioner under his leader, Aura the Guillotine. During the infiltration of Count Granat's city, he operated alongside Lügner, who directed the mission. However, Draht's reckless solo assault on Frieren led Lügner to bitterly dismiss him as incompetent after his death. He also shared a working dynamic with Linie, another Executioner in Aura's ranks. His target, Frieren, completely outmatched him when he foolishly attempted to take her life in secret.
Trivia
Draht's name originates from the German word 'Draht', meaning wire or thread, which directly reflects his unique magic of creating razor-sharp mana lines. Additionally, in the official artwork styled after ending cards released during the anime's broadcast, his fellow executioners Lügner and Linie were featured together while Draht was notably omitted.
