Overview

Gluck is a character in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End who serves as the feudal lord of the Fortified City of Weise. He is a noble and the father-in-law of Imperial Court Mage Denken. Lacking actual power in a city consumed by political strife, he formed a long-standing alliance with Macht of El Dorado, one of the Seven Sages of Destruction, to accomplish his political goals. Possessing a deep understanding of demon psychology, he is depicted as a cunning and pragmatic politician.

Appearance

Gluck is an older man with grey or white hair styled with parted bangs, alongside noticeably thick eyebrows. He dresses in formal attire consisting of a suit, a neckerchief, a waist belt, and tall boots. He frequently carries a walking cane and is often seen smoking cigarettes.

Personality

Gluck is a shrewd and calculating figure willing to employ ruthless tactics to achieve his ends. Despite his pragmatic nature, he possesses deep affection for his family. He has a thorough grasp of the dangerous, alien mindset of demons, never naively trusting them even while maintaining a mutually beneficial dynamic with Macht as a self-described 'bad friend.' Tormented by guilt over the methods he used to achieve his goals, he ultimately desires justice and seeks to face retribution for his actions.

Abilities

Gluck possesses exceptional diplomatic talents and high-level political acumen. He excels at manipulating strategic situations, notably recognizing the deceptive capabilities of demons and leveraging them for diplomacy and neutralizing political rivals. His sharp intellect allows him to grasp that demons lack the capacity for true malice, enabling him to navigate interactions with them with full awareness of their nature.

Background

As a powerless lord in Weise, a dumping ground for ousted nobles, Gluck quietly lamented the city's corruption. After his righteous son was assassinated by rival nobles, he resolved to enter the violent political struggle himself. Upon encountering Macht, Gluck struck a deal by offering to teach him the concepts of malice and guilt in exchange for servitude. Using Macht's power, he eliminated corrupt rivals and restored prosperity to Weise. Decades later, Macht turned the city to gold in an attempt to comprehend guilt, a fate Gluck anticipated and accepted. After the golden spell was eventually dispelled, he willingly submitted himself to trial for his past crimes.

Relationships

Gluck shared a long-standing, strange bond as 'bad friends' with Macht of El Dorado. He is the father of Lektüre and became the father-in-law of Imperial Court Mage Denken after their marriage, having previously assigned Macht to act as Denken's magic instructor. Following his restoration, he expressed his gratitude to Frieren's party, and he also had interactions with imperial figures such as the envoy Flesse and Canon of the Magic Special Forces.

Trivia

His name, Glück, means 'luck' or 'happiness' in German. Influenced by his late wife's fondness for black tea, he enjoys drinking tea in addition to his habitual smoking.
