Akon

Overview

Akon is a character from the manga and anime series BLEACH by Tite Kubo. Serving in the 12th Division of the Gotei 13, he holds the position of Vice President of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. Originally holding the rank of 3rd Seat, he is eventually promoted to Lieutenant. As a founding member of the Institute, he acts as an indispensable second-in-command who directs central operations whenever his captain is away.

Appearance

Akon has dark hair styled in a side-parted spiky cut that leaves his broad forehead exposed. His facial structure features a distinct lack of eyebrows and three fleshy horn-like implants on his forehead, which were absent during his youth. He has dark greyish eyes. Usually seen in a white lab coat, he stops wearing it after his promotion to Lieutenant, at which point he adorns a gold chain around his neck with the 12th Division insignia attached.

Personality

While somewhat more reactive during his youth, Akon matures into an imperturbable and unsmiling figure. He remains composed regardless of the severity of a crisis, exercising sound judgment under pressure. His steadfast nature earns him deep trust from his fellow researchers and squad members. He is also a board member of the Shinigami Men's Association.

Abilities

In combat, as demonstrated during the 'No Breathes From Hell' arc, Akon relies on chemical weaponry rather than drawing his Zanpakuto. He uses an ability known as 'Melting,' combining a green chemical solvent with the blood of a fallen foe to create a powerful acid that instantly dissolves the physical body of similar enemies. The activation of this technique requires a unique chant structured around Mahjong hand combinations.

Background

Akon was originally a prisoner in the Maggot's Nest before joining the 12th Division upon the creation of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. Having followed Mayuri Kurotsuchi since that early period, he became a core pillar of the facility. During the Thousand-Year Blood War, he took charge of administrative control in the Seireitei and made the critical connection to request aid from Ichigo Kurosaki. Following the death of Nemu Kurotsuchi, he was appointed as the new Lieutenant of the 12th Division.

Relationships

He serves under Mayuri Kurotsuchi, the Captain of the 12th Division and President of the Institute. Having known Mayuri since their time in the Maggot's Nest, Akon is considered his most capable right-hand man. Fellow personnel, such as Hiyosu, rely heavily on his leadership, acknowledging that the Institute's operations would derail without his guidance.

Trivia

Akon's voice actor changes between his younger self and adult self, being voiced by Kaya Miyake as a child and Hiroto Okuda as an adult. Beyond the main manga and anime series, he also makes appearances in animated feature films such as 'BLEACH: MEMORIES OF NOBODY' and 'BLEACH: Fade to Black.'
