Kotetsu Isane

Overview

Kotetsu Isane is a supporting female Soul Reaper in the anime and manga series BLEACH. Serving as the Lieutenant of the 4th Division under Captain Retsu Unohana, she plays a vital role in medical relief and auxiliary operations within the Gotei 13. Despite her exceptionally tall stature and tomboyish looks, she possesses a gentle and timid spirit. Following major conflicts, she ultimately steps up to assume leadership as the Captain of the 4th Division.

Appearance

Isane features short purple hair styled with two delicate braids on the right side and near the nape, complemented by red tassel earrings on both ears. Standing at 187 centimeters with a voluptuous figure, her slender and statuesque frame gives her a slightly masculine appearance. Following the great war, she updates her hair to a clean short bob haircut.

Personality

Kind-hearted and compassionate, Isane is naturally timid, indecisive, and easily frightened. Despite her imposing height and boyish appearance, she harbours deeply feminine tastes and longs to wear cute clothing, though she frequently struggles to find garments that fit her tall frame. In contrast to her quiet everyday demeanor, she demonstrates remarkable composure and dedication during medical emergencies.

Abilities

Her Zanpakuto is named Itegumo, which splits into a three-pronged blade upon uttering the release command "Run." It is an ice-type blade that possesses healing properties. Isane excels in Kido spellcasting, particularly high-level Bakudo utility spells such as Tenteikura for broadcasting messages across vast distances and Kakushitoshaku for tracking spiritual pressure. Additionally, she possesses surprising physical strength, allowing her to handle disorderly patient groups effectively.

Background

Isane spent much of her career fulfilling medical support duties as the second-in-command of the 4th Division. During Sosuke Aizen's rebellion, she utilized her broad communication techniques to inform all Soul Reapers of the situation. During the Thousand-Year Blood War, she suffered immense sorrow over Captain Unohana's departure and death, yet continued her duties treating injured combatants. After the war, she was urgently appointed as the new Captain of the 4th Division, accepting the mantle on the condition that her younger sister serve as her Lieutenant.

Relationships

Isane held immense devotion for her superior, Retsu Unohana, revering her deeply even after learning her true past. She shares a close sisterly bond with Kiyone Kotetsu, whom she regularly visits on days off and later appoints as her Vice-Captain. When Kenpachi Zaraki revealed that he had defeated Unohana in combat to inherit her title, Isane accepted the news with mixed emotions and solemn respect.

Trivia

Isane loves rice porridge so much that she once tried eating it exclusively when her height surpassed 170 cm, hoping its meager nutritional value would stop her growth, though she ended up reaching 187 cm anyway. Conversely, she deeply despises fish cakes, to the point where they haunt her dreams and startle her awake at night. Her personal hobbies include flower arrangement and tailoring.
