Overview
Cang Du is a character in BLEACH who appears during the Thousand-Year Blood War arc as a member of the Sternritter, an elite order within the Quincy army known as the Wandenreich. Designated with the Schrift "I" for "The Iron," he is a calm and resolute martial artist who acts as a key antagonist against the Shinigami, notably clashing with Tenth Division Captain Tōshirō Hitsugaya.
Appearance
Cang Du is a slender man with Asian facial features, short black hair styled with M-shaped bangs, narrow slanted eyes, and a single vertical scar on the left side of his mouth. He wears a white Quincy military overcoat over a white sleeveless Chinese kung fu outfit paired with flat kung fu shoes. On his hands, he equips a pair of iron claws.
Personality
Cang Du maintains a cool, reserved, and decisive demeanor. He disdains pantheism and adheres firmly to a personal philosophy that those who share life together should also share the same death. While he remains quiet and observant during conflicts among his comrades, he executes his duties with unwavering resolve.
Abilities
Through his Schrift "I" ability, "The Iron," Cang Du can harden his skin into steel, granting him virtually invulnerable defense against physical weapons while enhancing the force of his hand-to-hand attacks. He utilizes iron claws as his Reishi weapon to unleash "Shejinzhao," a technique that fires a massive snake-head-shaped Reishi blast. Additionally, he used a Medallion to steal and wield Tōshirō Hitsugaya's Bankai, Daiguren Hyōrinmaru, and activated Quincy Vollständig to escape being frozen.
Background
During the Wandenreich's initial invasion of the Soul Society, Cang Du confronted Tenth Division Captain Tōshirō Hitsugaya and Vice-Captain Rangiku Matsumoto, stealing Hitsugaya's Bankai using a Medallion. In the subsequent invasion of the converted Seireitei, he overwhelmed Matsumoto and targeted the weakened Hitsugaya, but lost the stolen Bankai due to the Shinigami's use of Shin'eiyaku. Although he broke free from Hitsugaya's freezing attack via Quincy Vollständig, he was brought back to Silbern for his defeat and subsequently executed.
Relationships
Cang Du is loyal to the Wandenreich emperor, Yhwach. On the battlefield, he serves as a direct opponent to Tōshirō Hitsugaya and Rangiku Matsumoto. While he stays quiet during internal squabbles involving comrades such as Bazz-B, he is ultimately executed after his defeat by Sternritter Grandmaster Jugram Haschwalth.
Trivia
Cang Du's character design heavily incorporates Chinese martial arts aesthetics, reflected in his kung fu clothing, claw weaponry, and qigong-inspired energy attacks. During his execution, he tried to block Jugram Haschwalth's blade by activating his steel skin ability and taunted him, but was cut in half by Haschwalth's Schrift ability, "The Balance."
